Coming off her cameo performance as the Queen of the Potholes after her tag-team performance with fellow city commissioner Pedro Cardenas to patch a crater on private property in his district, commissioner Linda Macias announced she had followed up with a deafening victory over another car-eating crater in her own District 2.
Cardenas, after very publicly vanquishing the pothole, then had a smooth road to victory.
(To her credit, Macias echoed Mayor John Cowen's assertions that the cost of labor and materials used in covering the pothole would be charged against the developer. " I just wanted to inform you that today, during the building standards committee, they voted to file a line/fine against MCD LLC or current owner to recuperate the monies that were utilise (sic) to fix the pothole on McDonalds and Academy.)
This time the offending sinkhole was spotted near the Chic-Fil-A restaurant in her District 2, and – after hearing from her pothole-shattered constituents – announced that it, too, had ben vanquished with city crews and materials.
"That is a Brownsville national park, our Grand Canyon," wrote a poster named Kelsey Ballesteros.
"That one is a bigger problem, especially to Brownsville visitors that drive through there for the first time," she wrote.
It also elicited political support for Macias' pothole crusade from others.
"Ese es commissioner, no chingaderas," wrote Beto Cordova. (That's a commissioner, not B.S.)
And: "Linda, your caring heart for the citizens of Brownsville is so heartwarming," wrote a couple who identified themselves as Charlie-Rosalinda Cabler.
Macias, whose term will expire May 2027, has made no secret that she will be running for re-election and her role as the parade majorette of the Pothole Patrol has obviously given her the spotlight in the ongoing battle against the notorious Brownsville potholes. And she promises more. This time, bomb-cratered Dana Road, a work in progress in District 2, is in her sights.

In Texas, the general rule is thatpublic tax dollars cannot be used to fix potholes on private property.
Here's why:
Texas Constitution Article III, Section 52(a):
This section prohibits the "gratuitous payment of public funds for a private purpose". Fixing potholes on private property is considered a private purpose, as it benefits a private individual or entity, not the public at large.
Public Funds for Public Purposes: Public funds are generally meant to be used for public purposes, such as maintaining public roads and infrastructure.
When are they going to finish fixing Old Highway 77. They started and only done a mess. Now there’s grass growing on where they pull out the old road and on the other side where cars are allow to drive oneway there’s a lot of potholes. It seems like it’s going to take years to finish it because you never see people working there. I wish things would change in Brownsville, when you start a project finish it before you start on another project. Lets make Brownsville beautiful again.

Bottom line — we, the taxpayers, are footing the bill for the repairs, along with employee salaries, workers’ comp, insurance, and more — all while the property owner carries zero liability, since the work was never sanctioned or approved by them.
She’s just chasing recognition — and political campaign donations. Read between the lines of lies and political spin disguised as “diversity.”
What about the countless potholes scattered across our city streets — not just in a favored Commissioner’s district?
We’re talking about a designated business district with special privileges and financial perks, yet the cost of repairs fell on all city taxpayers — for private land repairs.
It tastes, looks, and feels like illegal mismanagement of public funds.
And let’s be clear — the one who needs to be held accountable is the City Manager. Commissioners play politics — that’s expected. But you, City Manager, are responsible for approving all city operations.
Heads need to roll before other Commissioners start feeling entitled to hand out special favors in exchange for private political donations — pennies on the dollar for major-cost repairs.

Man, this cardenas guy just loves to break the law? But again, this is typical in the corrupted city of Brownsville. So, is anyone going to have the balls and file a complaint on cardenas? Or, is he going to reimburse the taxpayers of Brownsville and get away with it? Where is the district attorney in this? Is the Brownsville city commission going to do something about it? Impeach or censure him? When are the taxpayers of Brownsville going to say enough is enough?

Anyone who has committed a misdemeanor in the city and can’t afford to pay for the high price of violations should be referred to the cities engineering and public works department to work on the reconstruction of our streets.

After reading the article on potholes in private property being repaired by our city commissioners, I would like to know what our District 3 city commissioner is doing about fixing Stillman Road which is one of the heaviest traveled roads (public) in the city of Brownsville. Stillman Road is so full of potholes that patching it up is not the answer. It needs to be repaved completely. So, Mr. District 3 commissioners, your constituency is requesting your full attention to this concern. In fact, Mr. Montoya, your faithful readers would appreciate your support on the request.
