BISD GRADED 87 BY EDUCATION AGENCY, GARDEN PARK EXCELS AT 92

(Ed.'s Note: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released its school district and individual campus ratings.

We have always had a soft spot for Garden Park Elementary on the city's west side, one of those schools that – like Palm Grove on the extreme eastern part of the Brownsville Independent School District – was one of those "forgotten" barrio schools that at one time consisted of refurbished military barracks for classrooms. It was the first school that this blog's editor attended while living in the impoverished Las Prietas barrio in the early 1960s. Our principal then was Mrs. Nell Palmer.

But since then, sanitary sewers have replaced the septic tanks used for the bathrooms and permanent brick buildings have replaced the old barracks. Garden Park has consistently won chess tournaments against "better" schools of rich districts across the state. Congrats to its students, teachers, staff and administrators. Go Tigers! Go BISD!)

Brownsville Independent School District is the largest district in the Rio Grande Valley, and they had the exact same score two years in a row.

Out of 100 they scored an 87 both years. While that overall score stayed the same, their campuses did see improvements.

The TEA released these grades after a two-year legal battle. The district says the school ratings are a way to see how they performed following the STAAR test.

Operativos de Trump contra el narco.

Acoso militar.

Congratulations to the Raquel Pena Elem School students, staff and administrators! We have been tops since the school started in 2008.

The district was always an A-rated district when Dr. Zendejas was here as superintendent. Does that tell us something?

Dr. Anthony Knopp from Southmost would say that Brownsville schools still suck.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO MONEY...The STAAR Test is a multi-million dollar industry. This test will NEVER be eliminated from the public schools in Texas.

The grades are inflated. They did not see the daily cheating, the extra time to complete assignments, the due dates not respected because parents demand teachers to accept assignments, the lack of reading skills. BISD doesn't clean the windows, they do not fix the floors, leaks everywhere, dirt and dust all over, and the lack of fresh air in the buildings.

Y el Chavez says he is satisfied! Of course, HE STILL GETS HIS BLUCKY check for doing nothing to improve each campus and fire some top heavy administrators!

I’ll never forget when our teacher gave us the answers to the TAAS test, she looked down the hall to see if the coast was clear, closed the door and then started giving us all the answers. Yes the entire class! That’s how you get inflated scores! BISD don’t fool anyone, 98% of these kids aren’t ready to handle anything but UTRGV level of University. When they leave they are no where near ready.

At Med High School in Mercedes, the STAAR Test is treated like any other test, and they get top scores. In BISD, they literally shut down P. E. classes and all extra curricular activities to take the STAAR Test which is a minimum skills test. The teachers in BISD are forced to teach the STAAR Test all year. Kids are bored out of their minds. Teachers are frustrated. Administrators are bullied and threatened to get excellent scores by Assistant Superintendents. Nobody wins, everyone loses. It's a vicious cycle. I remember when school and learning was fun! Something needs to be done to fix and overhaul the sad situation in BISD!!

In ten years, brick and mortar public schools will begin to close the doors and shutter the windows. Learning will be on-line. Only those that really want to learn will succeed. That will be less than half the population.
