Special to El Rrun-Rrun
AUSTIN, TX – Representative Erin Elizabeth Gámez (D-Brownsville), issued the following statement regarding the beginning of the Second Special Session of the 89th Texas Legislature:
“My hope is that with a second special session we can start anew and focus on the issues that really matter to Texans, like disaster response and mitigation. However, if the Governor choses again to prioritize redistricting above all else — let me be clear: I came back to continue the fight, in a new arena.
I broke quorum because it was the right thing to do. The strength of our democracy lies in protecting the integrity of the process. This isn’t a Republican or Democratic ideal; it’s an American ideal. We can’t afford to take our freedoms — or our democracy — for granted. That’s why we took action: to defend the values we hold dear and to stand against efforts to silence our communities.
In doing so, we brought national attention to an attempt to weaken our voices by dividing communities like ours in the Valley. We stood up, because democracy demands it.
Despite facing threats of arrest, criminal charges, and expulsion from our duly elected positions, we stood our ground to protect the rights of Texans. During the first special session, we successfully blocked the passage of a congressional map crafted by D.C. insiders — one designed to let politicians choose their voters, rather than allowing voters to choose their leaders.
This fight continues on a new front, and we must establish a strong legislative record for the legal battle ahead. We will lay the groundwork in the State House so we can prevail in the courthouse.
We deserve fair maps. We deserve a government that reflects who we are — not one that’s suppresses our voices.”

Erin Gamez is in danger of being fired by the Governor. Just wait and see they will find a picture of Erin at a party or doing a deal with a local businessman. Time for people to defend and support Erin Gamez.
So what? Who runs the state? Fuck around and find out says Abbott.
Leaving the state was exactly the right thing to do. Those that did were doing Job 1, protecting democracy and keeping Abbot and his cronies, including the felon Trump, from negating democrat votes ad rigging the election. This should be the first priority of every member of the Texas congress. Sady it is not. When someone says they should be here doing their jobs know that they were doing their jobs the only way that was left to them. Protecting democracy is more important then anything else they can do. And this bullshit about how they should be protecting Texas and making good on what happened on the Guadalupe River reminds me that they thought a warning system was too expensive to fund but spent many millions more to try to block maids and gardeners and cooks and waiters from crossing the Rio Grande with in-river barriers. The cost of a small portion of Abbots barrier would have paid to wire the whole Guadalupe River with alarms.
Breaking quorum is not the right thing to do. It’s unprofessional and just because you don’t like something at work and your walk out means you have no job to come back to. You are elected by the people to do your job not to run away because you do not agree with something that sits before you. An attorney cannot run away from a court hearing because it’s not going their way. Pathetic behavior, they all acted like babies and need to be replaced.
You get on here talking about protecting democracy when local democracy is being disregarded and you don’t do crap about it. Brownsville is allowing a JP from another precinct to place political signs pretending he’s God all over town and no one does anything. JP Chuy Garcia is a joke and if you care so much about democracy, start locally.
10:36 The GOP Congress did the same thing to avoid voting on releasing the
Epstein files. How do you feel about that? Sounds like selective amnesia.
I don’t agree with either one! You take an oath to do the job, you walk out and should be removed. Politicans work for the people, running away from media questions is insulting. If you don’t want to serve or answer questions you don’t belong in politics, at least honest politics which locally is an oxymoron.
Very hypocritical , when Democrats do the gerrymandering its not a threat to democracy. When Republicans do it, then all he'll breaks !ose.pathetic no objectivity.
