But the raids keep rolling — like the one at a MacArthur Park Home Depot, where 16 Latin American workers were hauled off. The ACLU says Trump’s “racist mass deportation agenda” is alive and well, court orders be damned. Trump’s lawyers counter that construction sites, landscaping gigs, and day labor corners are basically illegal immigrant magnets — not always proof, but close enough for government work.
Now the Supremes have until Tuesday to hear from the immigrant side in Noem v. Perdomo. If they greenlight this thing, you might want to keep your toolbox in the garage and your Spanish in your pocket.

Not the shrill alarm clock version they sell you now. Back then it was a slow dawn, a quiet click in the head. The blinds going up, the sun not just shining but telling you something.
It came from the Black tongue, the street corner prophets, the men who knew the cops by name and the judges by smell. 1930s, 1940s. Lead Belly had it in his mouth before most people knew it was a word. He’s singing about the Scottsboro Boys, nine kids railroaded by the whole machinery of the South, and he says, “Best stay woke, keep your eyes open.” Not a Hallmark card. A warning you’d better not forget.
Through the sixties it slid under doors, passed hand to hand in smoke filled rooms and protest lines. To be woke was to have the map, to see the trap before you stepped in it. White America didn’t want the word, didn’t want the knowledge. It was Black talk for Black survival.
Then the century turned and the wires lit up. 2008, 2014. Ferguson, hashtags, phone videos of the same old story. “Stay woke” was back, walking tall, pointing fingers. It grew legs, ran into other fights like gender, climate, who you love, what you believe. Too many saw it and didn’t like what it saw in them. So they turned it into a punchline, a scarecrow, a word to beat with sticks.
But the old meaning’s still there, buried under all the noise. Eyes open, head up, watch your back. The bluesmen knew. The marchers knew. Even you know if you’ve been paying attention.
