RETALIATION MURDER AGAINST FEDERAL FISCAL DELGATE IN REYNOSA AFTER STOLEN FUEL CRACKDOWN ON CARTELS

Ernesto Vásquez Reyna, the Attorney General's Office Tamaulipas state delegate, was killed in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico on Monday.

Mexican authorities suspect the killing was retaliation for recent seizures of stolen fuel and other actions taken against organized crime groups operating in the area.

The killing of a top government official in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas is being investigated as a potential act of retaliation by organized crime, according to Mexican investigators. The assassination occurred in Reynosa, a city along the Texas border, in the middle of a busy avenue. 

The Attorney General's Office stated that preliminary information suggests the killing is linked to the authorities' seizure of more than 475,000 gallons (1.8 million liters) of stolen gasoline in July, which was described as a "great setback" for organized crime.

Authorities have not released specific details of the attack, but stated that two additional vehicles were involved and one was recovered.

Reynosa is known to be controlled by a faction of the Gulf cartel called the “Metros. Drug cartels in the region are increasingly involved in the sale of stolen gasoline as a source of illicit income.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of crime and violence in Tamaulipas, particularly in border areas such as Reynosa. The U.S. State Department issued a Level 4 travel advisory for the state, advising against travel due to the significant risks of crime and kidnapping.
