BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A 24-year-old Mexican national residing illegally in Edinburg has pleaded guilty to transporting illegal aliens, resulting in death, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. Victor Manuel Martinez-Gallegos admitted to picking up several aliens in Brownsville on May 27, 2024, and driving them to a stash house.

The investigation revealed that one of the aliens, a Guatemalan national, was in visible distress and later died at the location. Martinez-Gallegos confessed to leaving the body near Maverick Road in Brownsville, where authorities later discovered human remains identified as the missing victim, according to the press release.

“Human smuggling is a depraved, dangerous business, and one where the smugglers often show no mercy or compassion to those they transport,” said Ganjei. “I implore anyone considering hiring a smuggler - either for themselves or their loved ones - to think twice. Stay home and stay safe.”

The investigation was conducted by Border Patrol with assistance from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office and the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana C. Cano is prosecuting the case.

Hope is a powerful emotion, Juan.

These immigrants only want help getting here. Sad, but that's humans for you.

Conditions at home must be deplorable and seem hopeless. Threats by gangs against you and family, lack of economic opportunities and facing starvation. The decision to leave families behind and risk your life because options at home have been exhausted, is not an enviable one. The treacheries and dangers that are inevitable on their desperate journey are many times insurmountable. I've had a stranger show up at my doorstep offering to cut my grass in exchange for a sandwich. How would I react if I
was unable to provide for my children or elderly parents? Join a cartel or engage in criminal activity? That's the easy way out. No. I would do everything in my power to put a roof over my family's head, put food on the table and clothes on their backs. We all would. Coming to this country legally is a luxury out of reach for many people. Our current immigration system is flawed and obsolete. I don't have all the answers, but I refuse to
become dehumanized and treat others less fortunate than myself with disdain. Peace

People who come to this country without permission often struggle in their own countries because they do not have enough education or job skills. "Why should we accept people who might only put a strain on our economy?" We should focus more on what our citizens need. The Mexican government must take action to support its citizens. For many years undocumented workers in this country have been helping the Mexican economy while harming ours.

Good to see them called illegal aliens.

Young men always want to leave home and try to reach their goals and earn good money. This has happened since the beginning of time. High school students leave town, study at a university, land a job and earn big money. Same story.

A lot of the people that come over are the ones that cut the yards, trees, clean houses, wash windows, wash cars...the back breaking work that the regular Joe is willing to pay for.
