Have you experienced problems in the trash collection in your neighborhood?
And if you're a business owner, has the collection of the trash piling up in dumpsters been disrupted so that now the dumpsters are overflowing and calls to GMS have been met with the news that the company no longer has the trash collection contract and that it has been taken over by Republic Services?
If it's any consolation to you, you're not alone as complaints about residential and business trash collection pile up like black plastic trash bags outside the overflowing dumpsters.
Business owners along Price and the frontage roads say that their trash collection has been delayed for days and that after calling GMS, the waste collection company that had ben operating month to month for years, they were told that they no longer had the city contract and that they should call Republic to find out when they would be scheduled to pick up.
"They said they no longer had the contract and to call Republic," said a business owner. "When we called them, they said they would be over to pick up before 5 p.m., but that was two days ago. The whole alley is full of dumpsters overflowing with trash."
Residents, too, have ben plagued with delayed trash pickup schedules resulting in trash receptacles standing on the curb for days, often creating health hazards."I live in a cul-de-sac and we are used to the GMS trash pickup schedule," said a resident in a subdivision of Morrison Road west of McAllen Road past the Academy sports store. "But this past week they were days late getting here and the trash receptacles stayed out in the street for days. The other night a drunk driver ran over three of them and all the trash spilled out into the street creating flies and a foul odor across the neighborhood."
He said that the wind carried the spilled trash to the property of the woman who lived at the end of the cul-de-sac and littered her yard with refuse.
District 4 Commissioner Pedro Cardenas said he has been receiving complaints from residents in his district as the city tries to transition between both companies to bring the matter under control.
(In the photo at right, garbage spills over into the alley and in the distance, an overflowing dumpster is visible.)
"We are having issues with the change (from one company to the other). I am getting calls and referring them to Republic almost every day."
When informed of the problems at the strip mall, Cardenas said he had let Republic know about the overflowing dumpsters behind businesses at the corner of W. Price and Frontage roads.
"I texted them to let them know," he said and and added that the service interruption should have never happened.
"Both companies were told they had eight months to complete the transition," he said..
District 2 commissioner Linda Macias said that at the last moment, GMS had missed the deadline to submit their proposal for trash pickup and the contract went to Republic by default.
"GMS missed the deadline and didn't submit their contract," she said. "So Republic got the vote."
Yet, residents and business owners alike say the transition has been a messy one and that they are experiencing trouble with trash piling up behind their businesses or in the curb in front of residents' homes.
An exasperated business manager surveyed the line of overflowing dumpsters on the service alley behind the business that included bars and restaurants and shook his head.
"If you ask me, it stinks."

Chicanos don't know how to use the garbage container.
GMS may have been late to submit a contract but they were never late picking up the trash.
When companies submit a contract aren't they required to submit an action plan? Null the contract for failure to fulfill their duty.
Go back to GMS.
FACT!
This is an opportunity for City Commissioners to show up around their District. Get up early, with phone in hand and start calling GMS, Republic and get together will all the hood with brooms and trashcans and clean the street. Take pictures and post them in social media. You have to get up early: 6:00 AM 7:00 AM 8:00 AM 9:00 AM and follow the garbage trucks.
I don't know who it is but someone always drops an entire trash bag on Coffee Port or Ruben Torres and that debris spreads everywhere, lol. "Now thats what you call Trolling." They do it infront of all these Million dollar homes and the city places a sign that say 10,000 to a 100,000 dollar fine for littering. Ha ha ha someone really hates all those rich assholes that live there, lol. I hope the city installs cameras there just to catch the person who does it.
Or someone is just jealous of them? But when you go to their Barrio and do it to them do you think they like it?
Pedro should have mentioned how he is a district commissioner for an area he doesn’t even live in? If he doesn’t live there how does he know there’s a trash problem? Or maybe he should have brought up how he faked a divorce from his wife to get BCIC funds ($20k) then sold the place within months all while keeping the cash. Maybe next time Pedro opens up his mouth he should talk about something meaningful? Pedro how many times did you eat at fancy restaurants with the guy from Republic??? Pedro how did you lose your restaurant? Pedro how much in taxes did you owe from your restaurant? Juan, I really appreciate your watchfulness in the community but please inform us of this man’s continuous infractions that never get brought to light, we as a community deserve to know these things.
They don't like it but the city has street sweepers that run like clockwork there. . .Secretly, it gives everyone room to shit talk about 956 Fatigue?
This is everywhere now. A huge health hazard. We deserve better and we pay for better. Very poor city leadership. BROWNTOWN IS A DUMP!!! PDISGUSTING !!!
District 4 Commissioner Pedro Cardenas has reported that he has been receiving complaints from residents in his district regarding the city's transition between two companies to address the issue. Many residents feel frustrated, stating that Cardenas does not respond to their calls and appears to be overwhelmed in his role as a commissioner. That's saying it politely! Actually, he sucks.
Awesome! That's telling him. Montoya has sold out to Pedro!
I’m almost positive we’re in a state of transition from one company to another, I’m sure it’ll all be picked up soon, be patient and quit crying about everything
Nothing new here
Same result
Just someone else got their palms greased
The Japanese will attend an event and pick up all the trash left in the stadium.
