Let’s support the BISD bond election this November 4.
I am very proud to be a product of the BISD school system. I enjoyed attending our schools and supporting my children at school events when they attended school at BISD.
Now, halfway into early voting into the bond issue on projects that have been recommended by a committee composed of a cross-section of our fellow district residents, we are not just voting YES for Propositions A and B in this November's bond election, we're empowering the citizens of Brownsville to take charge of our school district's future. We can ensure that the improvements and changes we need are guided by the community, for the community.
This bond proposal will ensure our schools are rebuilt, maintained, and provide the right environment for our children to learn, and we will be able to take control of our district, and not continue the top-down, business-as-usual practices that have guided us in the past. Now is our chance to wrest control from bureaucrats and return it where it belongs: in the hands of the people.
Our fellow district residents have determined that 45 district facilities are in desperate need of improvements and maintenance.
BISD also has a need for a new Career and Technical Education Center to keep programs moving forward. I also support a new performing arts center for our growing community that will be the largest in the Rio Grande Valley.
While previous elections have addressed growth with new schools, this election is to invest in what we already have. The District has done a good job at retiring most of its old bonded debt and has the capacity to finance new facilities through the voter approved bond election this November 4. And the way we've structured it, new taxation will be minimal.

Many of BISD's schools are between 50-100 years old and need facility and infrastructure upgrades for basic operation such as air conditioning units.

But let's face it, things cost money, and good things cost good money. It's a fact of life. Do we want the best for out kids?
In certain cases involving senior citizens, they will pay nothing at all.
Students perform better in newer and/or recently renovated buildings with proper air conditioning and heating systems. Our children deserve access to nice classrooms, no matter where they live. And it's in our hands to provide them this and keep control of the improvements every step along the way.
And if we are vigilant, we can demand that local preference on bidding for their construction be implemented so that our tax money will stay here.
Join me in voting for Proposition 1 and 2 on November 4.

In BISD's facebook page they defend themselves stating that they have a right to inform the residents of Brownsville about Propositon A and B. It is legal. But they also work with hope, probability. If measure X goes through, then this will happen. And if measure Y is approved then this will also happen. And you will pay lower taxes !!!! What craziness is that ? They are gambling with property taxes.

Tired of high property taxes.
Somebody please help a Brownsville taxpayer please. I read in the Brownsville Herald last year that three elementary schools (Cromack, Garza and Del Castillo) were closed last year. BISD bragged that no staff members lost their jobs and that they saved over $3 million. They were closed because of low enrollment. They blame school choice programs but do not admit that charter and private schools are performing better. Now they want more tax payer money. Some of it will go to a performing arts center when the art centers that already exist in Brownsville are empty most of the time. There are already 20 charter (which are public schools by the way) and private schools in Brownsville. They have doubled over the last five years and are not going away for a reason: parents want better education. Some Brownsville kids actually go to Los Fresnos ISD for a better education because of Los Fresnos track record. Sounds like as a taxpayer I will be throwing good money after bad. I pay enough taxes already and can barely make a living.
Things are fine throughout the district. We don't need this one.

Mr. Montoya: I voted NO. NO because they explain their point but in other bond issues they do everything but what they say they were going to use the money for. I voted NO because those children that will "benefit" from the bond, their children will pay for those higher taxes, NO because the current board will be defeated, they will be gone and the tax increase will be there. NO because the Superintendent will be gone and to begin with his school taxes go to Harlingen not to BISD, our board has children going to private school and they say BISD is the best, but for the regular folks not them. NO because they could sell properties and set aside money assets and then figure out how much is actually needed but they don't want an independent auditor. NO because they try to convince parents telling only their side of the story and not the full side of the story. Each story has 3 sides. My side, your side and the truth. I hope voters THINK THEIR VOTE
