Millions of Americans won’t receive SNAP benefits this month thanks to Trump’s shutdown. He’s refusing to use USDA contingency funds to keep the program afloat – after gutting it to help pay for tax cuts for billionaires and corporations in his big, ugly bill. This is all happening because Republicans in Congress refuse to work with Democrats to extend vital healthcare subsidies for millions of Americans.

I fully recognize there are many families who rely on SNAP just to get by, and I support a strong safety net for those in real need. But I’ve also seen cases that make me worry the system isn’t working as intended—like when it appears benefits are misused or the program is taken advantage of.
It can feel frustrating to pay full price for modest groceries while seeing what looks like abuse of the system, especially when there are people who legitimately need every dollar of help they receive. And this concern doesn’t stop with food assistance—some of the same issues seem to carry over into medical benefits and fraud in that area as well.
What I’d really like to see is a system that protects the truly vulnerable while being better at preventing abuse and fraud—whether it’s working under-the-table income going unreported, improper resale of goods, or exploitation of medical referrals. Strengthening oversight and accountability would help ensure resources go to families who genuinely need assistance, not to those treating the system like a side business.
I don’t want the safety net weakened. I want it to work the way it was intended—for people who would truly struggle without it.

It is time for all Americans to get food stamps. No questions asked. It is just a treat for being American. Germany has this system. They get a card and every citizen has a given amount of money deposited by the government.
