YEAR AFTER YEAR, OUR HOMELESS PROBLEM GROWS WORSE

FEBRUARY 2024
YESTERDAY
Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Comments: Looking at the homeless lying on the sidewalk with their belongings tied up in plastic bags  near the Good Neighbor Settlement House makes you wonder whether the people of Brownsville have the intent or political will to address it once and for all.

You know we got $1 million to build a shelter and the city said "no." Now they had a party at the old county jail to raise money and they had hundreds of people there. I’m sure they raised way over a couple of hundred thousand.

Before they used to serve three meals seven days a week. Now they don’t serve weekends and they have become top-heavy. They have more employees in offices. It’s a shame when you go by there and people are lame when they use to them take them to spend the night at the Ozanam Center on Minnesota Road  near the airport. But officials there say that they don’t take them anymore.

At some point or other, city leaders and board members of the Brownville Community Improvement Corporations of the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation will realize that not addressing the problem will only discourage people from coming downtown or investing there.

Investing in a decent, safe center for these unfortunates is actually an investment in the implementation of a downtown economic strategy. Who'd want to take their families to the city or invest their time and money when you have them asleep in the sidewalk along our main thoroughfares?  If they can't see the humane aspect of dealing with this problem, think of it as protecting our economic development efforts. But do something.

Right now most of the people that I know are just trying to survive. I can't afford to feel for these people. To each their own. Those within the city who are in positions that can render aid will be dealt with by God.

Too bad so sad.

How does "God" deal with the homeless? He let's them die, all the while he talks about giving them aid and justice, which he never does. I saw a Palestinian child who was skin and bone, die. His older brother seemed fine since he was eating his brother's food. That's survival, I think there's different spectrums and definitions of survival. Someone at a poker tournament is also trying to survive to rank to get in the money, which is different from being homeless, dealing with war or a genocide. I feel for the homeless and so should people, stop shitting on the poor and advocate for help.

Folks, these Conservative Republicans don't think education, healthcare and a living wage are human rights.

Give them a ticket to rent at the new El jardin hotel. Just do not ask for an ID, do not ask them to stop hoarding etc
I saw them when they were getting up around 8:40 am. Lots of people in bicycles circling around the area trying to steal from them or invite them to do criminal acts. All these people have families that worry about them.

This is a problem that all these people in these elected positions should have a solution for or atleast make an attempt. We have money for a lot of useless projects but not for fixing roads, infrastructures, and/or assist with people in need of help. All these different mayors, commissioners, and county Judges need to be replaced. They have deepened their pockets enough!! This is why we are slowly but surely turning Cameron County into a RED county!! Enough is Enough

If something grows worse does it grow or not? If a tree grows worse, it it smaller or taller? If my 401k grows worse, is it growing slowly?

Many of the homeless have mental issues. You need to deal with that, also.

They need a safe place where to sleep. The City of Brownsville and BISD should look into finding a place where the homeless can show up and get a nice place to sleep. No questions asked. The Police and the Church should also help. Not a hospital.

Sadly here in Brownsville education has never been valued.

The Palestinian people are victims of Hamas who is living in Qatar in a mansion and the people living in poverty stop blaming everyone else call it out to HAMAS.

And our city if ran by what? Democrats and you have the nerve (or the payoff) to continue to push one for Governor? Democrats created the demise of Brownsville not the healthy growth.
