Even before he rammed his private school voucher scheme through the Legislature, out-of-state corporations were circling Texas like vultures, ready to cash in on our kids. And now Abbott just rolled out the red carpet for them.

His hand-picked comptroller quietly handed full control of the entire Texas voucher program — the largest in the nation — to Odyssey, a New York corporation backed by Abbott’s billionaire donors and the same national “school choice” machine that has spent years trying to dismantle public education.

Let’s be clear: This isn't education policy. This is a billion-dollar giveaway. This is corruption. And Abbott is gambling with Texas kids’ future.

Here’s what Abbott just handed Odyssey:

* Control over every taxpayer dollar in the voucher program — nearly $1 billion to start, projected to hit $5 billion by the end of the decade

* The power to approve which private schools, vendors, and homeschool programs get taxpayer money, with nearly zero transparency

* A $2 million annual propaganda budget to sell Texans on vouchers, run by Abbott’s former political staff

* Total oversight, despite Odyssey’s track record of mismanagement and fraud in other states

And who helped Odyssey snag the contract? Abbott’s own lobbyists, consultants, and donors — including Pennsylvania billionaire Jeff Yass, who poured millions into Abbott’s campaign to force vouchers through. A man who doesn’t live in Texas, doesn’t send his kids to school here, and doesn’t care what happens to our classrooms — except how much money he can squeeze out of them.

This is Abbott’s playbook: defund public schools, call them “failing,” blame teachers and parents, then funnel our tax dollars to voucher corporations owned by his biggest donors.

For them, turning a profit off our kids means nothing. But for working families — for kids like me who grew up in Texas public schools — a strong public education is everything. It’s the bridge to a brighter future that every child deserves.
