DEMOCRATIC PARTY CANDIDATES FILING FOR THE MARCH 2026 PRIMARY

Special to El Rrun-Rrun
The Cameron County Democratic Party has released the names and position sought by candidates for the party's nomination for the March 2026 Primary.

And it promises to be a dog fight.

103rd District Judge Janet Leal faces no opponent, but the position left vacant by retiring 17th District Judge Ben Euresti has three candidates vying for the spot . They are Noe Garza, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and Erin Hernandez Garcia.

Juan Magallanes, incumbent for the 357th District Court is also unopposed, as is 484th District Judge Adela Kowalski-Garza.

None of the two Brownsville Justices of the Peace up for reelection – JP 2-2 Cyndi Hinojosa, JP 2-3 Mary Esther Sorola – face an opponent in the party primary, but they face a Republican opponent in November.

Incumbent County Clerk Sylvia Garza faces Denise Renee Garza, while District Clerk Laura Perez-Reyes is running unopposed.

The County Judge's race will see two contenders – Brownsville Navigation District chair Steve Guerra and former Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza – try to replace Judge Eddie Treviño. Many observers see Garza as a "stalking horse" candidate to boost Guerra's chances at unseating Treviño. When Garza ran for reelection in 2024, Guerra supported him against current Sheriff Manuel "Manny" Treviño, who soundly defeated the one-term sheriff.

And Garza supported the Republican Jimmy Manrrique against Democrat Manny Trevino in the Nov. Election that year. Now he's running as a Democrat.

County Treasurer David Betancourt is being challenged by former JP Jonathan Gracia who is running on a platform to bring change and to lower taxes. Gracia is emphasizing attracting young voters to the party and saying the established elected officials like Betancourt have allowed the Republicans to make inroads that resulted in Cameron County going red for Trump.

And surprisingly, two contenders are challenging Precinct 2 commissioner Joey Lopez. They are former Brownsville Independent School District records management administrator Martin Arambula and newcomer Joseph L. Lucio.

Cameron County Democrat chair Jared Hockema has no opponents.

I will pay $10,000 cash to anyone who tells us what Steve does for a living and where his "office" is. Information will need to be verified. I will leave the cash well hidden somewhere once that person makes contact with me.

I’ll join you and add 10k to anyone that can tell me what Pedro Cardenas and his wife do for a living? Where do they actually work? They took the restaurant from him, he’s got kids in private school (expensive tuition), new car, and building a house in Maidera. I’m not a mathematician but that sounds like a lot of over head for people that don’t hold a real job or own a business. Remember they got 20k from BCIC and sold the place 1 month later, which is against grant rules. Birds of feather ….
