(Those of us who still remember when speaking Spanish was prohibited (and punished) in the schools will relate to this old poem that was originally published in 1982 in El Portavoz, the MEChA newsletter at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was later reprinted locally in Dr. G.F. McHale-Scully's El Rocinante in the Feb, 19, 1991 edition, more than 34 years ago. Note how every other line – and the title – is in either Spanish or English, making it, in effect, bilingual.)
ESTIMADO MISTER
By Juan Montoya
The school is yours
La lengua nuestra
And still you insist on English
Para niños y maestra
Speaking in Spanish, you say
Nos volvera analfabetos
But even Oxford's won't show you
Como se gana el respeto
Mexican, Cuban, Hispanic
No ve valor en ninguna
But we can function in bothY Ud. solamente en una
You've never witnessed a child
Comprendiendo una lección
When you use his mother tongue
En vez de la del sajon
Your paperwork and degrees
Dis'que es persona educada
Maybe that's why you come up
Con tan chulas pendejadas

The problem now is that some, not all, Spanish speaking immigrants want to be catered. You can go to some businesses here in town with signs that read, "Se habla Espanol." When what I am thinking is, " I'd be surprised if you spoke English."
I love and respect both languages. Awesome poem. Te aventaste.
The international language is money. Businesses will cater to and welcome the mighty dollar. The rule for a successful business is like the animal kingdom. You either adapt or perish.
Bilingual in the valley means being illiterate in two languages.
English is the de facto international language of business. Not Chinese, not goathumper, not Spanish, an not Russian.
You are jealous.
The USA language is English and thank God Trump made it the official language.Mexicos and all rest of America is Spanish if you don't like the English language go home to your Spanish speaking country STOP complaining and stop Abusing this country if your going to speak Spanish in the privacy of your own home not a problem but don't force your language on others
