The board had previously approved Chavez's retirement effective June 30, but an agenda item titled XII.E.1. Discussion and consideration regarding the Superintendent’s contract, including placing the Superintendent on administrative leave, suspension, or termination of contract was placed on Tuesday's agenda. Discussion and consideration on naming an Interim Superintendent. (Board Agenda Request Carlos Elizondo/Board Support Minerva Pena.
Those voting to suspend Chavez were Elizondo, Peña, Denise Garza, Frank Ortiz, and Neida Ruth Grantland. Those voting against were Daniel Lopez Valdez, and Jessica Gonzalez.
Benavides graduated from La Joya High School in 1971 and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Pan American University.
After seven years with the McAllen Independent School District and a stint at the Region One Education Service Center, she returned to La Joya as a counselor. Benavides earned several promotions before taking the top job in September 2006. She abruptly "retired" from the top job with the La Joya BISD in February 2019.

Adiós Dr. Chavez. Thank Brownsville ISD for your retirement check and benefits. Enrollment down but BISD salaries keep getting higher. Administration now works half day. Everyone running political campaigns. How much does TSC Board Pay? Alejandra Aldrete and JJ De Leon have taken out over $500,000 in loans and vendor donations for TSC Board. Why? Those two need to work at their jobs first at BISD. Us taxpayers are paying their BISD salaries.
BISD school board couldn’t come up with a better interim, one that didn’t resign/retire abruptly from La Joya ISD. Read The Texan article “ Texas Education Agency Takes Control of La Joya Public School District”. BISD needs better leadership starting from the top, Brownsville children deserve better!
Because La Joya school district was run so well that they had to be taken over by the T E A. She is a perfect fit for the corrupt BISD, LOL.
Frankie, the PEIMS Director Sergio Saenz was caught having lost millions in bisd funding cuz he submitted incomplete data for the past years to TEA. The Superintendent knew but kept it quiet. Now, BISD new CFO Rosario Peña is paying PSJA and La Joya ISD to help fix this as per Technology Admin. Sergio Saenz was Ex Superintendent Rene Gutierrez. TEA needs to take over now.
Denise Garza votes with the Rata Pelona again! She was a snake in disguise the entire time! Daniela I’m sorry you fell for her BS. She is now owned by the Rata Pelona and Steve G’s cronies. Don’t worry Denise’s time as a severely unqualified person to be in politics will be coming to an end soon. Well. BISD how far can you sink? Your hire - was a supt that was bought out and released from the upper valley. How bad do you have to suck to be kicked out by the upper valley? Also, she impacted STATE law NEGATIVELY….after she built the water park. BISD is far from the great district it once was….it’s time for TEA to just STEP in and take over. La joya was a mess when she left as supt and worse when she left as a school board member……now that it is run by BISD it’s doing great!
Watch as suddenly the HVAC contracts go NORTH to the upper valley. And watch how suddenly new insurance contracts.

Very true. Chavez was also controlled by the Unions Leaders Hammes and Alegria. All Chavez did was the Coffee Meet and Greet, the BARSE Meetings, the lunches with retirees and cash in. The bisd is collapsing. Several Administrators put on leave.
