For Our Children Who Will Learn How Inhumanity Happened in Our Time
Because we stopped demanding our humanity.
Because many
felt your fresh hearts in the darkness
and forgot you were the same as others' children,
your little sleeves all made of wool and cotton.
Because Power called the Truth
what it was not.
Loves, we teach you love
and wonder.
But remember this, remember this
forever:
There are moments
when you kneel in deep
allegiance,
and moments when the splendor
is surrender,
and the moment,
on this earth of furious burning,
when even Love
must rise up in its silence
and make a braid
of reeds and cords and leather
and find the lords of money
in the temples
and sweet sweet Jesus like a flood among the rubble
whip them out with the beautiful rage of God.

In the ordinary moral universe, the good will do the best they can, the worst will do the worst they can, but if you want to make good people do wicked things, you’ll need religion.
