Ed.'s Note: We had purchased chicken and sausage barbecue plates for one of the annual La Cultura Vive fundraisers to stage the Texas Best Conjunto Competition for high school groups across South Texas. In the photo above, we caught founder and organizer Carlo Hernandez's best side as he helps the ladies dole out the succulent chicken plates. (The Mexican rice is delicious and the chicken is soft and dripping in its own juices.)
Their hard work pays for the venue and other necessities of hosting the largest school conjunto competition in the state. Our deep gratitude and big shoutout and congratulations to this bunch for making the event happen every year. The Elks Lodge 2876 lent their facilities this Saturday to the group to host the fundraiser. Hohner Accordions is now hosting the event yearly. Contributions are always welcome to support this effort to keep our musical traditions (to make one, call (956) 592-4475). Timo Ruedas and Juan Castillo are also on the roster as are all the ladies in the serving lines. Gracias, guys and gals!
