Now we know what the new strategy the publisher of the Brownsville Herald is to attempt to lift the sagging fortunes of the once-proud daily newspaper: Out-yellow the Seccion Policiaca of El Bravo.
Tuesday's edition featured not one, not two, but three (count them, three) police blotter stories prominently featuring drunken fights and titillating details about a lap dance. Not content to report that a 25-year-old man and a 35-year old woman had been arrested for public intoxication, it also reported in detail the arrest of the woman for public lewdness.
The report did not stop there. It said that an officer who went up to a private loft in Charlie's Bar found the 35-year-old woman"with her breast(sic) exposed wearing only a thong. (She) was reportedly straddling Garza and moving her body up and down simulating sexual intercourse."
This is titillating stuff at its best (no pun intended) and were it not for the details in another of the stories, could be disregarded as a random oversight on the part of the night editor. But did the readers of the newspaper (including minors participating in Newspapers in Education) really need to learn the lurid details?

Now, we may ask ourselves, how can a private lap dance in a loft that was not open to the public constitute "public" lewdness? And since the major element of a public intoxication charge is that you are either a danger to yourself or to others, how can it be justified that the two were arrested for that offense?
But the page 3 story on a bar fight includes more juicy details that may seem overly descriptive and have no apparent informational value. In the story, a 42-year-old bartender is charged with slapping a 29-year-old man for dancing with another woman.
She apparently, was dancing with a 25-year-old man, who the daily points out, was married.

Oh, the immorality of it all!
After she slapped the 29-year-old and chased him out of the bar, the men got into a fight and a bystander flagged down a BISD wannabe cop who called out Brownsville's finest and arrested all three and charged them with public intoxication.

Don't we have a major investigation of a $40 million BISD insurance contract, burglaries galore in the city, waste and fraud everywhere you turn? Oh, yes, and how about the immorality of the wars that are killing thousands of innocent people? Yet, the daily is wasting space on women's breasts and married men fighting with their movidas?
