There it was, a beautiful new pumper truck from fire station 1 (downtown) idling its huge diesel motor while some of its personnel was inside a Dollar General Store making a few (necessary, we hope) purchases.
We wondered about it and called the station. We're told the pumper is the newest addition to the FD's rolling stock and that it weighs tons. A lot of it is in the 1,000 gallons of water (@ 8.25 pounds a gallon) it carries in the tank out of sight below the hoses.

A firefighter told us the truck gets "4 to 5 miles per gallon" of fuel because of its weight.
Not to be picky, but is it really necessary to jump in the pumper to go to the dollar store? We thought the city was broke. We hope the operator doesn't take his pumper home as well.
