HE'S AT IT AGAIN, MA!

By Juan Montoya

Guess whose political yard sign that is cloaked under a heavy plastic blue cover?
If you guessed Ruben Peña's, one of eight candidates running for the Democratic Party's nomination for Cameron County Commissioner for Precinct 2, you get the teddy bear.
Peña, who erected a similar sign on the corner of Seventh and Polk streets, has obviously found a way to circumvent the city's ban on political yard signs until 60 days before the March 2 primary election.
In the case of the first sign, supporters of his opponents were quick to report the infraction to the city and Peña's campaign workers covered the sign with a heavy black plastic. Unfortunately, heavy northern winds soon blew the plastic away and motorists could readily see that the sign belonged to Peña's campaign.
Peña, always looking for an angle, decided to go ahead and erect his signs around the city before the Jan. 2 starting date, but with a twist. He'd cover them up and uncover them come next Saturday.
"Legally he's within the law because no one can see what's behind the plastic," said an opponent. "But he's breaking the spirit of the law. In other words, He's showing the voters that he is a little too slick for the rest of us. I don't know whether that's going to hurt him or help him."
