ONCE MAJESTIC, THEATER NOW A RELIC OF BROWNSVILLE'S PAST

By

Workers with a sign company were busy Monday morning cleaning up a downtown Brownsville trademark: the Majestic movie theater sign.

Those of us who grew up here remember going to the Majestic Theater. On Saturday, a quarter would get you in to the show and you'd have enough left over to get some popcorn and pop.

During the evening shows, you'd emerge from the theater and head over to Higgie's Cafe or to Fisher's for a cheeseburger and cokes. You'd sit in a booth and play on the small jukeboxes (there was one in every booth) at two songs for a nickel. The town was still small enough so that you'd recognize virtually everyone you met on the sidewalk.

Those days are gone, but not forgotten. Those were the days when you could also go down another two blocks on Elizabeth, turn right and go to the Capitol to see the standard "Land that Time Forgot" for the same price. There was also the Grande Theater, El Iris, and, of course, El Mexico. It's amazing that all these theaters were operating downtown at the same time, and on weekends all were full.

It would be great to see that kind of activity again downtown. How about it Peter Goodman? Any ideas after all this time on the job? Didn't think so.

What a trip through memory lane for so many of us. Those of us who could not afford the Majestic would go to the Capitol because you could see 3 movies, a cartoon and 1 episodio for a dime and free refills of popcorn if you knew the popcorn guy. We would take in our own munchies from home and spend Saturday, from 1 to 6 PM with all our friends, come out and go cruise down Elizabeth Street, as the boys held up the walls at the Post Office. Que gitty! We all knew each other and some of us built life-long relationships that still exists. Yes, Mr. Goodman, lets get this back downtown.

Dumb creators of the Majestic Mall destroyed our beautiful Majestic Theater.
