The on-again, off-again candidacy of Captain Rene Coronado for the Texas Southmost College board of trustees is on again.
After E-mailing us, other blogs, and the Brownsville Herald that he was withdrawing from the race to prevent the splitting of the vote between himself and Kiko Rendon in favor of incumbent Rosemary Breedlove, he apparently had a change of heart and resent us a missive indicating his change of heart.
"Greetings. I understand not everyone will agree, but after talking with my wife and family, I have decided to stay in the Place 5 Race. With my family's support, I believe I can continue and God willing win this race. I respectfully apologize to Mr. Rendon, but I must continue. Thank you, Rene."
Some reports indicate that Rendon and Captain Coronado had reached an understanding that would see Coronado withdraw from the race with the understanding that if Rendon won, he would have his support for the next open seat on the board.
As many readers know, the Cap has a Whistleblower's Act lawsuit against the college for reporting that TSC had underpaid (and underreported) the hours for some workers in his department. The college acknowledged the mistake and had to pay the workers. Coronado said his firing from the position was a direct result of his actions and charged TSC with retaliation in his lawsuit.
There will be voters who undoubtedly will probably ascribe his lawsuit as the motive for his candidacy. But the apparent flip-flopping at this stage of the race cannot possibly bode well for his constituency. Do we smell a Rendon-Breedlove runoff in the works?
