We ran into our old friend Rory Sharpe after the Latin Jazz Festival free outdoor concert on Levee Street by the Capitol Theater.
Normally taciturn and introverted, Rory was laughing and shaking hands all around, an ebullience his friends are not used to witnessing in him.
"What's the matter with Rory?" I asked his bud Freddy. "I thought he didn't drink."
"He doesn't," Fred replied. "He's on a political high."
Fred went on to say that Rory, a Republican since he was at the old Brownsville High School before it became Hanna and the lone member of the Young Republicans Club, thought his day had come at last.
"He thinks Solomon Ortiz can be defeated," Freddy said.
Ortiz, who has been the Democrat representative for District 27, for the last 28 years, is
making another run at the position. Many of us Democrats, Republicans, and now Libertarians, think it's high time Ortiz went away. Many of us see him as an ineffective legislator, with less bills passed in all his hears at the tough than one has fingers in one hand.
Yet, his stranglehold in the Rio Grande Valley has been able to keep the useless Ortiz in Washington. Now, as rumors of his weakening strength in Nueces and San Patricio counties is becoming apparent, the chances for a challenger who can challenge him in the southern part of the district have become suddenly better.
"This is our year," Rory said as he sauntered over. "Ortiz can be beaten. San Patricio and Nueces are ours. Cameron could prove the charm."
He detected our skepticism and reached into his shirt pocket.
"Look at this," he said. "These are the results of the 2006 U.S. Rep results. Even then the writing was on the wall. Why do you think he's spending so much time and money down here?"
He then went on to say that in his opinion, the national Libertarian platform that calls for legalizing drugs and making abortion personal choice do not resound with local conservative Hispanics.
"The pro-abortion, and pro-legalization of drugs do not represent the values of conservative Hispanics," he went on. If you look at his blog, he doesn't really attack Ortiz. He spends most of his time criticizing Blake Farenthold, the Republican candidate. Whether he knows it or not, he is working for Ortiz."
Rory was apparently feeling his oats, yet was adamant about his views."Ortiz is vulnerable," he said. "When the redistricting takes place next year, Ortiz will move go Cameron County because its the vote here that is keeping him in office. We hope to change that in this election."

It is unfortunate that Mr. Rory wants to support big government and more taxation that the Republicans have given us in the years before the Democrat administration. The only real choice for a change is Ed Mishou.
Just a quick look at the candidates should identify the winner. A real patriot and experiences leader is the ideal person to recover the liberties lost in the past Demo - publican administrations.
This just in at Streets of La Frontera Blogspot news ticker.

Go Blake!
What's unfortunate is that for the 1st time in 28 years somebody, not Mishou, can kick Ortiz's ass out of office, and you sir, Mr. Drew and Judge Neece, are pushing Mishou to an outstanding 4% maximum finish. I get it, you all want to promote ballot, well do it at the freaking county level!!!
A vote for Mishou, is a vote for Ortiz!!!
If you want your vote to count, Vote Blake Farenthold!!!
MR DREW
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!! b HUSSEIN obama AND HIS ADMINISTRATION HAS SPENT MORE MONEY THAT PRESIDENTS WASHINGTON THRU REAGAN COMBINED!!!!! FYI HUSSEIN obama IS A democRAT.
THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET IS THAT MISHOU IS A REPUBLICAN. HE DIDN'T ENTER THE PRIMARY RACE BECAUSE OF TOO MANY CANDIDATES RUNNING IN THE REPUB. CAMP AND THE COMPETITION WAS TOO FIERCE. HE WAS INVITED TO RUN AS A LIBERTARIAN AND I UNDERSTAND THE PARTY EVEN PAID FOR THE ENTRANCE FEE TO RUN!!!
A VOTE FOR MISHOU IS A VOTE FOR ORTIZ. GOD ONLY KNOWS HE'S BEEN IN CONGRESS FOR 28 LONG YRS AND WHAT HAS HE DONE FOR THE AREA, WHY ARE WE STILL POOR!!!!!!! SOLOMAMON ORTIZ GOT TO GOOOOO!!!!!!!
All the Dumbokrats in Cameron County who vote a staight party ticket...even if they don't know any of the candidates...will re-elect Ortiz. He's a slug and in Washington he is a joke...often called the Marco Polo of Congress because he finds a way to travel the world at the taxpayers expense. I agree with the above...FIRE ORTIZ!
WHEN b hussein obummer TELLS solomamon ortiz TO BEND OVER HE IMMEDIATELY GRABS THE ANKLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS JACK ASS HAS TO BE SEND OUT TO PASTURE NOV.2, 2010
The issue still remains that you will get Ortiz II when you vote for Farenthold and the DemoPublicans. (I was told that he was an extremely liberal Democrat until just recently.) I wonder if any of you can confirm that the State Republican Party originally supported Jessica Bradshaw and is not supporting Mr. Farenthold. He was a Democrat for all these years and still feels at home in the Republican party. Many old time Republicans have left because of the party changes. I have also heard a rumor that Ms Bradshaw and Mr. Duerr may be supporting Mr. Mishou.
Agree with a previous poster. A vote for Mishou is a vote for Ortiz! Voters are tired of Ortiz funneling earmarks to his security firms via port contracts, and taking trips around the world on the taxpayer's dime. His association with Ping Lee, convicted and jailed for smuggling illegal Chinese immigrants into the US immigrants brings his judgment into question. He has run a political machine of cronies, Lenchon Rendon, Lencho's brother, Miguel, who was head of the RTA in Corpus, his son, Solly, Jr., Texas state legislator, his brother, Oscar, Nueces county commissioner, and on and one. No doubt his sisters or their husband's are probably getting paid by some government entity. Enough is enough! Vote for Blake Farenthold.
