SOURCE: BISD DENIES RUMOR ATKINSON GOT COACHING GIG

By Juan Montoya
Sources close to the board members of the Brownsville Independent School Board are vehmently denying rumors that bubbled over the July 4th Weekend that former City Commissioner Charlie Atkinson had landed a coaching job at the district.
The widespread rumor first surfaced as a comment to a post on this blog and try as wee might, we could get no answer from the district or individual board members at the time.
"People probably thought that since his sister Dr. Sylvia Atkinson had been appointed as the assistant superintendent for Human Resources, that Charlie had an inside connection to a coaching job," the commenter stated in an email. "But the current majority on the board has sworn not to do the same thing the old majority on the board was doing. Hell will freeze over before they approve an any hiring that smells of favoritism."
Those applying for employment at the district have ton get on a waiting list at the Human Resources department and fill out an application online. Among some of the information requested is a listing of all the places where the applicant lived since he or she turned 18. Another is a criminal record and whether the applicant has been convicted of any offense that could be classified as "moral turpitude."
However, applicants to the district also face a limited window for employment because the board has placed limits on hiring to cope with the budget shortfall in Texas.
"If Charlie wants to apply, he has to get in line just like everyone else," the commenter stated.
And board president Catalina Presas-Garcia said the budget restrictions in place were only the beginning. She said that next year's budget will be even leaner than the current one.
"People should get ready for what's coming down the road," she said of the cuts. "We managed to balance the budget without firing anyone, but it's going to be tougher down the road. We're taking out all the extra perks we were used to getting. Get ready."

Brownsville is a family town there are many individuals who are related to someone or are friends with someone that is the reality within the power structures of BISD and other elected. I am sure that Charlie is as qualified as any other coach at BISD that is evident when you go to the sports park and see his involvement with young kids. We should not penalize someone for the horrible gross pattern of nepotism that existed before the fabulous four got elected. If he is qualified and meets all the requirements and the job is available then why not hire Chalie Atkinson.

I bet the commenter who posted about Charlie having an inside track would not mind if someone related to him would get that job.

Like her or not Caty Presas got the job done new leadership new direction balanced budget and no firing of teachers one plus three equals four and that is what it took to bring change not to forget all the blogger activsism and the the electoral efforts that led to change.

Get rid of Drue Brown and hire Montoya.

to be qualified for hire the applicant must be certified. bisd policy was/is that one can use a alternative certificate in lieu of the standard certificate for any "academic" position, but not for a "coaching" position. does he possess a standard or alternate certificate or is he applying for one or the other? standard or alternate - which one?

How can he be hired if he will be going the ACP route? One must be highly qualified and we have many other people who are waiting for jobs. Plus, how did he clear the background check with the DUI on his record? He must earn his job like everyone else.

The fabulous four did it right, did they? Come on, give me a break. The 8.8 million from the federal govenment will most likely not be there next year. Is this why they got rid of the the CFO, because he wouldn't use that money for salaries, knowing it may not be there next year? You bet cha, Caty, things will be leaner next year.

I am sure Joe Rodriguez had all the qualifications he was a real Vince Lombardi.

Charlie should be hired because there are many relatives of las viejas pedoras that work in human resources like daughters and husbands.

The problem with the principal at Cummings was that she believed she was untouchable. She had numerous of grievances at Sharp and she had the same at Cummings. She is a snake and she did many illegal things. If it were just grievances, she would have been reassigned. For a person to be fired, illegal activities had to be involved. Quit trying to blame other people for her mistakes.
As for Charlie, he is worthless. He makes a scene wherever he goes. Can you imagine him a coach? After every game, he gets drunk wearing his team jersey. Wow, like we really need him.

Ohh boy, people get over it, no one got Trevino out, she did it to herself!! I dont know who those teachers are but
stop trying to blame them for Trevino's mistakes. Grow up, your acting like teenagers.

Who are the fab four?? Please, give me a break....With the exception of maybe 2-3, the rest are pathetic...Starting with the Sup.
The only fab four are the TSC Trustees...They are EDUCATED!!

Cummings was a family before Central office imposing Mrs. Trevino, the tyrant, on the faculty. What ever happened with site-based decision? Central office must stop using Cummings as a dumping ground for reject administrators. 99% of the teachers at Cummings are dedicated and caring professionals. BUT they will stand up against tyranny! They already had a horrible year of oppression-Leave them alone!

Mrs. Tevino did not do this to herself. And thank God that you do not know these teachers. If you get on their bad side they will do anything possible to hurt you. They have no heart since they have no life. BUT THEY SURE HAVE CATA PRESAS & JAY HARRIS EATING OUT THEIR HANDS AND NOBODY CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. CUMMINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE BECAUSE THOSE TEACHERS ALREADY HAVE THE POWER THAT THEY ALWAYS WANTED. MAYbe if this story is given to a reporter things will change.

You didn't seem to have a problem when Cortez served as a Board Member, he doesn't even have a GED. How educated is that?

And you don't have to be educated to know between right and wrong. Look what happened to the educated attorneys that got caught with Limas; and I hear there is more to come.

Trevinos problems go back to previous campuses, it did not start at Cummings. Why cant you understand that? Its obvious that you dislike those teachers and want to put people against them.

The principal at Cummings a snake? Illegal things? Fired? Does this blogger know something the public doesn't know?

Trevino has seved as an administrator under me. She has high moral and professional standards and expects the same from her staff. She comes from a family with a long history of BISD educators. Decisions made by her were ALWAYS based on what was best for the students, whether it was scheduing, budgets, or staffing. She did not tolerate teachers that left students unattended, favored a select group of students in their classes, or that had a history with bullying students. If it makes her a tyrant to hold teachers to a professional standard that are within the guidelines of BISD procedures, then so be it.

Fired? I think not. If anything, BISD is aware they have a jewel in their hands. All in the district know that children of an elite group of lawyers and judges attend Sharp. When decisions were made there, it was for ALL children not just for those that tried to push their own "elitist" agendas.

All in the district know about the history of bullying by rooted "ormiga" teachers at Cummings. Another blogger mentions the names. Information of such complaints is documented. However much documentation an administrator may have,a sole administrator does not have the jurisdiction to follow through on complaints when poor educators ride on the coat tails or skirts of a board members.

The cycle then continues.

WOW....Get outta here! The teachers you mentioned? Aren't they some of the original "ormigas rojas?" Trouble back then....sounds like trouble still.

If the administrator that wrote the comments about Trevino being so great really believed this, why be anonymous? Stand up and identify yourself so that the community knows who you are! I'm sure it was written by Trevino herself, one of her sisters, or one of her pawns that are still oblivious to the facts at hand. You all need to stop defending a person that has been removed from her position and is on her way out for good. I feel sorry for all of you! You need to enjoy your summer. YOU apparently really don't have a life.

My, my! Such bitterness! Must have struck a nerve!!!
Most bloggers remain anonymous for a reason. Until all identify themselves, their is no validity to what is written. It's called HIDDEN AGENDAS!

Anonymous said...

WOW!!! Look at what one person has done to this community. She is the only one you all have been arguing about. She is definitely a manipulative human being. May GOD Bless all of you!!!

Anybody can write whatever they want but the fact remains the same: Mrs. Trevino was placed on administrative leave (two weeks before TAKS) for one main reason- being an Incompetent instructional leader (with no peoples' skills.) GOOD RIDDANCE!

Blogger July 15, 2011 at 1:52PM-
You sure hit the nail on the head! It just seems like Trevino's little pawns whether it be her family members or the people at Cummings that fell head over heals for her just don't get it! BISD doesn't place principals on administrative leave for insignificant things! She never led Cummings anywhere but down the drain right along with her. She got to stay home and collect a hefty check for not doing a thing to deserve it. The faculty, staff and the students had to deal with all the backlash and trash talk that continues! BISD NEEDS to deal with this pronto so Cummings can get on with educating the kids not answering questions about why she was removed! Maybe once this is out in the open, the poor souls that are still backing her will stop in embarassment and stop badmouthing their colleagues! What a wonderful leader Trevino turned out to be-dividing the faculty and staff!

Cummings is now in the hands of new leadership. Let it be. Thank you.
