Edinburg City Manager Ramiro Garza, Jr., is running for Congress as a Democrat in Congressional District 27, the Rio Grande Guardian can exclusively reveal.
Garza, who was born in Brownsville and raised in Port Isabel, has strong family ties in Cameron and Nueces counties. The new-look District 27 runs from Brownsville to Corpus Christi. Currently held by U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Corpus Christi, CD 27 has been revamped by a federal court in San Antonio and is now weighted to favor Cameron County and Democrats.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Garza said his campaign would focus primarily on jobs. Edinburg has had the lowest unemployment among Rio Grande Valley cities for many years and is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas.
“My agenda is a jobs agenda. I have a long career in helping communities identify opportunities to bring new investment and jobs to those communities,” Garza said. “I think District 27 has great opportunities for growth, although it also has challenges. People are hurting economically right now and there is a need to create new opportunities.
