The old farts insisted on Cantinflas or Jose Alfredo even though both Mexican legends are still dead. The young nacos wanted Joan Sebastian or even Jenni Rivera. But in the end, the women had too much pull and apparently got what they wanted: Mexican telenovela heartthrob Pablo Montero as Mr. Amigo for next year's Charro Days fiesta days.
"There musta been all of five old farts that wanted someone that had already died," said a Mr. Amigo insider. "We had to tell them that most of the ones they wanted were dead or unable so then the women threw out this guy's name, Pablo Montero. He's all over the Mexican novelas and handsome and can sing and what not. The girls call him 'The Ranchera Hunk.' He'll be a lot of fun. We had some local folks from the internet say they wanted Miss Jenni Rivera, but we told them no Puerto Ricans or Cubans. So that's that"
Barring a premature Mayan apocalypse or the tentacles of garden-variety bureaucracy, the 37-year-old Montero will ride a golden unicorn, or maybe a fancy horse, down Elizabeth Street during the Charro Days parade and visit the town's hotspots such as the mall, downtown, city hall, the HEB on 802-- all the while accompanied by mariachis, singing rancheras with abandon, tossing away smiles, blowing kisses and charming the women silly.
Our Mr. Amigo insider said they are currently going over the details of the visit.
In 2006, there were rumors about a possible romance between Montero and his costar in Duelo de Pasiones, Ludwika Paleta, who is married to Mexican actor Plutarco Haza. Montero and Paleta denied the rumors until a video was made public in which they were seen making out. This is said to have caused Ludwika Paleta's separation from her husband. Paleta and Plutarco Haza later reconciled.
Last year's Mr. Amigo was Carlos Cuevas.
The selection process of Mr. Amigo is initiated annually by the President of the Mr. Amigo Association and the Selection Committee composed of four past presidents. The Committee seeks to designate an individual who promotes the improvement of the quality of life in the Hispanic Community and who also serves as a role model for the Community.
The recipient must also be a Mexican citizen who has contributed to the friendship and understanding of the United States and Mexico, and has excelled in their profession, exemplifying the highest standards in their personal and professional life. Over the past 39 years, the Mr. Amigo honoree has been chosen from a wide field of endeavors and accomplishments as illustrated on the Mr. Amigo roster.

I'm there, if just to see the hat...
Did some idiot really want a Puerto Rican or Cuban to be Mr. Amigo? This party is about our friendship with Matamoros, and Mexico.
Are you BS'in, or did someone really push for that?
Heard this guy ain't mr amigo anymore. Heard he got busted for dope possession and had his u.s. visa cancelled. If true, maybe he can do mr amigo but only up to the halfway point of the bridge.
(If true, maybe he can do mr amigo but only up to the halfway point of the bridge.)
Hell, I'm sure that it wouldn't be such a major problem for him to come over illegally. The rest of his compatiots do, don't they?

"compatiots"? You must mean those pesky Mexican-American "compatiots" that compose 93% of Brownsville's population.
So, you black or anglo?
