Special to El Rrun Rrun

Police Chief Carlos Garcia on Friday announced his retirement from the City of Brownsville after accepting the job of  Director of Security/Police Chief for the Port of Brownsville.  Mr. Garcia’s first day on the job will be Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

At a press conference on Friday, December 2, 2011, flanked by City of Brownsville and Port of Brownsville officials, Mr. Garcia announced that he will be retiring from the City of Brownsville, and has accepted the Chief of Police job at the Port of Brownsville.  “I am very honored to have served the City of Brownsville as both a police officer and Chief of Police over the last 30 years, I am very fond of the memories over the course of my career with the Brownsville Police Department, and I will cherish them forever….the opportunity at the Port of Brownsville will pose new challenges and opportunities and I am excited to take on with the same vigor and energy that I dedicated to the City of Brownsville,” said Garcia.  Mr. Garcia’s law enforcement career spans over 30 years, including serving as City of Brownsville Police Chief for the last ten years.  Port Director & CEO Eduardo A. Campirano stated that he is eager to begin working with Mr. Garcia.  “Carlos has the experience and track record to be successful as our new Chief of Police.  He brings exceptional integrity, credibility, and professionalism to our police department.  We are excited about the leadership qualities and the new direction that our Police Department can embark on,” said Campirano.

Founded due to matters of national security after the events of September 11, 2001, the Port of Brownsville Police Department is responsible for protecting both commerce and the Port community.  Over the years, the Port has received over 11 million dollars in grant funds for enhancing and hardening Port security.  “We are seeing changes both in the infrastructure and leadership at the Police Department……and his experience will help guide us in maximizing our security investments,” added Campirano.

The Brownsville Navigation District strives to be recognized for excellence in stewardship, earning strong public confidence in sound and responsive operations.  By 2015, the Port will have created more quality jobs, attracted more private and public investment, increasing port capacity, protecting the environment, and promoting common good through the strategic development of the Port of Brownsville. It is this very commitment to excellence that will ensure the Port of Brownsville will continue to contribute to the community for years to come.

That job used to pay $25,000 a year, which is about what it's worth. This is an abuse of tax payer dollars, Big Time.
