Gulf Coast LNG filed an application on January 10 with the US Department of Energy for a permit to export LNG out of a proposed 2.8 Bcf/d facility to be built at the Port of Brownsville. That permit is still pending approval.
The Port of Brownsville Board of Commissioners on Tuesday announced the approval of a lease option agreement with liquefied natural gas company Gulf Coast LNG Export, for 500 acres of port property.
A spokesman for the Port said in an interview that the board approved the lease option at a meeting earlier this month. [read Platt's article]
"We believe the Port of Brownsville is in a strategic geographic location to assure the success of this project, and we envision this to be a long-term relationship with the Port," said Michael Smith, principal owner and CEO for Gulf Coast LNG Export.
Smith is also CEO and founder of Freeport LNG Development, which owns and operates a 2 Bcf/d LNG receiving and regasification facility near Freeport, Texas, and is currently expanding that facility to add liquefaction and export capability.

What are the environmental implications of this 500 acre lease??? Will the Corps of Engineers evaluate the project in the same way the Port officials have had other lease requests evalutated. We have to wonder whose hands are under the table. How many jobs will this create, if any???? Amazing how smoothly this new activity has been greased through at BND...while other projects have died....on the vine.
This is truly big biz, the type our port is designed to handle. If they get their permit, thousands of jobs will result.
No not THOUSANDS of jobs only. 10. But almost free rent $100 per acre per yr. Get ass hole... Reed and COWEN got it!
