Aren't politics something?
When I was attending the University of Michigan, among one of my required Journalism classes was one on constitutional law.
Now, having been raised in South Texas, I had no idea that people like Clarence Darrow, Mike Wallace, Margaret Bourke White, Williams James Mayo, and other heavy hitters in their diverse fields had attended school there.
Now, having been raised in South Texas, I had no idea that people like Clarence Darrow, Mike Wallace, Margaret Bourke White, Williams James Mayo, and other heavy hitters in their diverse fields had attended school there.
So it was with some surprise when we walked into class one day and had to be patted down by Secret Service agents before they let us in the classroom.
To our surprise, President Gerald Ford was speaking with our instructor and after a small introduction, took some of our questions. After the perfunctory questions, "How's Betty doing after her rehab?" asked a classmate, the questions got a little heavier.
"Why did you pardon Nixon before he even faced a jury?" and "How could you sign off on the magic-bullet theory on the Kennedy assassination?"
Ford, if you'll remember, was on the Warren Commission that explained how a bullet could go through Kennedy's spine, exit though his throat, make a 90-degree turn toward Connally, go through his shoulder blades, make another 90 degree turn and strike his right wrist and was found up virtually unharmed on the hospital gurney the next day.
If so, this bullet traversed 15 layers of clothing, 7 layers of skin, and approximately 15 inches of tissue, struck a necktie knot, removed 4 inches of rib, and shattered a radius bone.
Of course no one believed it then, and probably some of us still don't believe it now.
After the Q and A, some of the students had their photos taken with Ford, I not being among them. In those days, the memory of the Nixon pardon was still too fresh for the militant mindset of the time.
But the reason this story comes to mind is because we at Rrun-Rrun received this Email showing John Shergold, a Brownsville attorney who has run for various offices in the Democratic Party, including this year's try at the chairmanship of Cameron County.
This photo (judging by Shergold's ample hair) was probably taken just about the time that George W. Bush had beaten Ann Richards in a no-hold-barred election where the trademark cutthroat Bush politics would be refined on his way to his two disastrous presidential terms in office.
In other words, the wound was still too fresh for most Democrats to stomach a handshake with W. This is probably the last thing that John would probably want to see as we head to tomorrow's election, but it is a keeper, isn't it?

You could ask Shergold about the picture, you know, before you write about it.
An obvious plant from one of the dirty democrats running against him. Their lameness just boggles the mind sometimes. A republican! Booga-booga! A thousand times more embarassing would be a photo shaking hands with Armando Villalobos, Abel Limas, Conrado Cantu or Gilberto Hinojosa.
already voted for Shergold.
Better yet, as Gilberto Hinojosa and his candidate if they don't feel the Democratic Party in Cameron County and the entire State of Texas would be better off with someone else in positions of authority. "Do as I say, not as I do" seems to have been Gilberto's motto as he misled the local party. He and David Sanchez have done more to advance the Republican Party than the actual Republican Chair ever did!! Anything that a Democrat can do to distance themselves from Gilberto and his candidate is the first step down a long path to restore the Democratic Party. If that means voting for Shergold, so be it.
pee wee no vale wee wee
The only folks who don't think a bullet can do that are the folks who do understand the ballistics and penetration of a 6.5 mm 160 grain round nose full jacket military billet. Those that do understand the round have no problems,
Just about anyone is going to jump in on a photo op with a governor or president. Even if they are from an oppoising party, the celebrity aspect makes 'em go for it. I probably won't vote for him, but not because of this picture. This is a feeble attempt to discredit shregold.
So what? Republican or Democrat Bush was still the governor of Texas. Why wouldnt you want to take a picture with him. Where is the harm.
My guess is you can find many Democrats in Cameron County who have photo ops with Republicans. Hell, Fillimon Vela sleeps with a Republican and it seems to be no big thing. Using this photo is pithy. Why not target some who have really screwed the public....like most of our elected officials today, including the current Democratic Party Chair.
So attending a university did absolutely nothing for you. You are a proven case of "getting a bachlor degree does not work out good for everyone" You have one and still you amounted to sooooooo little. Oh Well.....Triste!
This picture was taken in 1995 when
John was a legislative advisor to then Dean of the Texas Legislature
Democrat Doyle Willis at his retirement ceremony after serving
47 years.
I'm thinking John didn't pay you for your support. Sleazebag.
Pee Wee No Vale Wee Wee
Cheap shot Juan. I'll bet you can find lots of local officials in photo ops with Judge "Disable" Limas....what would that tell us. David Sanchez used to accompany Judge Limas on a private plane to Spurs games....tickets, plane and all free. Is everyone who has a photo op with "Mando" Villalobos connected to his corruption. Cheap shot at Shergold. Is it because he is not Hispanic????
I did not realize we had so many commenter that so easy to bait. One would think that they would refrain from posting on a blog that they claim to hate AND not read.
Please get it through your thick head, Montoya is a blogger, he uses this site to document HIS opinions on politics, history and current events.
Juanito too much corruption in the demotRAT party since juan magallennes ab nd gilberto hinojosa ran it since the late 1980's and early 1990's till now. No mas los de la clika de eyos could run and they made sure to intimdate others who ran against the party kings & queens, aurora tony y , joe rivera the judges etc etc etc, people all know outsiders are not welcomed in to this party so many of them went to the republicans. Hence you have 2 previous county judges who were republicans tony garza amd now carlos casocos, gilberto you did a great service to the party and helped put the rupublicans greatly why dont you go back to mercedes where you are from?
What does that pic have to do with the Kennedy assasination?
what a burn for Shergold but because of this, we no longer know who is who in Cameron County, they jump into the Democratic Party to win and then behave like the true republicans that they are,
they jump into the Democratic Party to win and then behave like the true republicans that they are,
