By Juan MontoyaWe understand that former Brownsville Independent School District trustee and current candidate for the State of Texas School Board of Education Ruben Cortez is not writing a book on how to make friends and influence people.
That much was evident to a number of restaurant diners who patronize the Danny's on the way to the Brownsville Matamoros Bridge (the old bridge.)
They report that when Cortez and sidekick Rosendo Escareño arrived at the place they were met by a special needs customer who inquired about how their day was going.
"It was a nice day until we met you," snapped Cortez, according to them.
"We couldn't believe he had said that to the young man," said one. "This is the guy who wants us to elect him to the state school board of education and that's the way he treats people with special needs?"
Cortez may also be wary of changes that are taking place in Hidalgo County, where a massive turnout gave him the votes he needed to overcome losses in Nueces and Cameron counties during the July 31 runoff.
Always devious in his dealings with the press, when he was asked how it was that he had won the election over Celeste Sanchez of San Benito, he answered that he had "come back home" for his support.
The fact of the matter is – and if the reporter had been on his or her toes – is that Cortez lost in his home county and it was the politiquero-delivered votes in Hidalgo County that got him into the November 6 elections against Laurie Turner, Republican nominee for the District 2 seat on the State Board of Education.
Also on that ballot is Libertarian candidate Lenard Nelson, of Rockport.
However, late last month Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra announced the the commissioners court had approved funding for two assistant district attorneys to investigate the use of politiqueros and politiqueras by candidates in local races. With the two prosecutors on board looking into vote harvesting and voter fraud, Cortez's sure-fire way to get elected might hit a snag.
In Cameron County, even his association with the vote-harvesting Ernie Hernandez machine could not produce him a victory here. If his use of the Hidalgo County machine is curtailed, he might be in for a November surprise.
He has so far been given a free ride by the media and Democratic voters who inexplicably chose him over Sanchez, a San Benito ISD asst. superintendent with more than 45 years in education, including classroom experience. Cortez, we understand, went back after dropping out of high school to get a GED. Check all his bio history, nowhere does he state his educational qualifications and harps about the boards on which he seats instead. As word gets out about this educational impostor, his support might start to disappear.
Then he might wish he had been nicer to the mentally-impaired young man he met at Danny's if the vote is close.

Cortez is a DICK and Rosendo is surely up to no good if her is seen with Cortez. Rosendo must want to invfluence Cortez's mommy. Neither of these guys is interested in the public, just serving themselves. Cortez believes his lack of education makes him a better choice to set school policy. What crapola. Your worst school board members are people that were teachers or worked for a school district. Mr. Cortez will do a greater service to the teaching profession than a biased educator of 40 years! Teachers have no common sense! If they did, they would dictate who runs our district by getting off their lazy asses and vote!
There have always been rumors that Cortez would go off on his own whenever the BISD trustees would travel. Cortez it is reported that would take a cab early in the day and npot return until lat3e in the eavning,...suggesting that he liked to experiment with his sexuality. Now that you say he was with Rosendo Escareno, an openly gay man, it makes sense. Is Ruben trying to seduce Rosendo for votes?

Cortez isn't smart enough to go out on his own. His campaign manager is his mother and she runs the show. Ruben is just the jerk who runs for his "mommy". If we elect this asshole to office in education, it will prove that the voters in the valley can be influenced by corruption and are not interested in education. Ignorance gives voters a "fuzzy feeling of comfort". So our motto should be "ignorance uber alles". Ignorance is bliss.
