WHAT HAPPENED TO MR. SHRIMP MR. SHARK?

By Juan Montoya
You remember local seafood entrepreneur Robert "Captain Bob" Sanchez's signature mascot known as Mr. Shrimp?
Well, now Bob has placed a mako shark on his marquee at his restaurant at 2034 E Price Rd. and we asked about the new addition to the maritime motif.
To our surprise, we found out that it is a real shark that had been through the able hands of a taxidermist and his teeth and eyebrows (shark have eyebrows or eyelids?) had been removed.
Now, Bob has another mako shark at his other restaurant at 2409 Boca Chica Blvd, but he said the shark there was made from some sort of paper mache and plaster painted like a shark.
At one time he had a large aquarium at the Boca Chica site but it proved to be too much trouble and had it removed.
Mr. Shrimp, however, has not been retired, Sanchez said. But with the weather as hot as it is, having someone walking in the hot sun in a shrimp outfit could be dangerous.
We warned him about the move afoot around the world to prevent the slaughter of sharks, especially by the Chinese who adore shark-fin soup.
"We don't sell shark or shark products," he told us. "But that is a nice-looking animal and I though it added a little something special to the sign. It's a pretty shark. The tail lets them glide right through the water."
Just this past June Jason Johnston, of Mesquite, Texas, caught a  female shark off Huntington Beach, Calif., that  weighed in at just over 1,323 pounds.
It was 11 feet long and measured 8 feet around its thick midsection, said Kent Williams, a California-certified fish weight master and owner of New Fishall Bait, where the shark was taken for frozen storage.
Johnson caught the massive fish after a 2 1/2-hour battle, the Orange County Register reported.
Only 23 of the 6,850 world records on file involve fish topping 1,300 pounds. The largest catch was a 2,664-pound great white shark that was taken off Australia in 1959.
"Well, it's not a record shark by any means, but it does give you an idea of just how strong and graceful these fish are," Sanchez plugged shamelessly. "And they get that by eating good seafood."

Thanks for reminding me about them. Ever since they sewage fiasco at the Price location, and the employee who took her kid with the flu to the Boca Chica location, throwing up in the trash can behind the counter and sneezing and coughing all over the place, maybe they deserve another shot. Next day they have the all you can eat, I believe I will go to lunch. I will express my interest in shark as well as stingrays. They're fuckin' man!
