WITH IMMINENT SENATE ACTION, PROTESTERS STAND WITH TEXAS WOMEN

By Juan Montoya
Even as the Texas Senate debates a bill that wold in effect deprive Rio Grande Valley women of a choice on whether to carry a pregnancy to term, a statewide caravan of protesters made their presence known in Brownsville that the fight is not over even if HB 2 / SB 1, the Republicans' back-door abortion ban, passes.
The bill prohibits abortions of fetuses more than 20 weeks post-fertilization, a change from the current 24-week restriction, requires physicians at abortion centers to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the center, and mandates that those centers be held to the same standards of ambulatory surgical centers.
That, said Whole Woman’s Health spokeswoman Fatimah Gifford, poses the most threat to women’s health. The bill would lead to the cessation of abortion services at her company’s clinic in McAllen.
On Friday, on the morning before the Senate received the bill that in most likelihood will pass, scores of local resident held signs and joined the Austin-based Stand With Texas Women  organization members and stood outside and across the street from the Brownsville Central Library.
"We are the mothers, daughters, wives and sisters of Texas standing up for our constitutional rights in Texas," reads their website.
An update from their website gives continuing reports on the Senate debate inside the chambers.
"Update 3:09 p.m. from Genevieve:
In the line, and I imagine in the gallery, the mood is still pretty quiet and calm. But in the rotunda, the crowd that Shelby photographed has grown, and there are people standing at the rails on the 2nd and 3rd floor, too.
They were singing "We're Not Gonna Take It," which as we now know, Dee Snider, the lead singer from Twisted Sister, completely supports. Then they started chanting, "Who's House? OUR House!" and the chanting echoed around the rotunda and could be heard throughout the capitol.
Outside of the Senate chamber, a smaller group of protesters were chanting, "Ho Ho! Hey Hey! Abortion rights are here to stay!"

WAY TO GO BABY KILLER WOMEN!

If Rick Perry signs this very restrictive abortion bill passed by the TX Senate yesterday, he will hand the governorship over to the Democrats. When the women of Texas elected Ann Richards after Republican Clayton Williams put his sexist foot in his mouth about rape....the Republican women and Independent women of Texas are likely to abandon the party in the next election. This bill is a disaster and will cost the state taxpayers millions of dollars to defend this bill in courts.

HOW DID OUR VALLEY STATE REPS VOTE?

so sad that Senator Lucio decided to go against a woman's right to make her own medical decisions and joined the extreme right, in closing down all the clinics that provide services for women who need them, is this what women voted for, when we voted for Senator Lucio? For a legislator to come into our bedrooms and tell us what to do with our bodies?

Thanks for the coverage, plus advocating that tough health decisions are a woman's business - no one else's ....

No man nor government has the right to decide for a woman as to whether or not she wants to risk her life when a pregnancy has gone bad. It is obvious there are many ignorant people reading this posted subject line, that haven't a clue as to what this is really all about and who it affects. For example: A wife and husband who have chosen to have their baby may discover at 24 weeks the fetus is not viable due to a disease, etc. At that time the doctor will recommend the pregnancy be terminated because the risk of the woman dying in childbirth as well as the fetus is high. At that point it should be left up to the woman to decide her fate. Risk having the baby or not." That is not for YOU or the government to decide. Educate yourself before you support lock step with something you know nothing about. The ban also eliminates a rape victim or victim of incest regardless of how young the right and opportunity to terminate a pregnancy. In many states a rapist is given visitation rights to the child they created during the violent act of rape. How would you like your daughter or your wife, etc., to endure visits by their rapist? Additionally, many here spew their angst toward women only. What of the men who act as Johnny Appleseeds (dogs in heat) who can't keep their pants zipped, create life then ignore its existence? Why not require boys at puberty get reversible vasectomies to eliminate unwanted pregnancies altogether? Then when the boys become adults reaching a time in their life to be responsible accountable father's they can reverse the vasectomy. That is no more a stretch to require that of the male species than it is to condemn women to very possible death. Furthermore, it is obvious to any reader with half a brain, that some of the comments made by males here, indicate they do not respect women nor value their rights. YOU are pathetic puny men, most likely unlucky with women and love which is the bases for your hateful comments.

That is a typical response from those with deep rooted tunnel vision, self-imposed ignorance and a far left leaning conservative point of view, but without substance to back up his position. The man who thinks he makes his point by yelling at people (all caps)then calls them names. With nothing to back up his position, which only strengthens the point that such people have no right to dictate to women anything. People like that believe themselves above God, if they did not they would not elevate themselves to Judge. According to the teachings of God, all people will be judged upon their death by himself, the "Almighty", not a puny human with a closed mind, vulgar mouth and a delusion of his own grandiose existence on earth.

Senator Lucio did the right thing because he is pro life. How can this lady in the picture say she is pro life and pro choice. Hello!!! Government should not have to make laws for us to do the right thing but we chose to let Gov. do it for us. Where was the outrage whey they told us we had to use seat bealts? This women make no sense they want to kill baby at 5 months of pregancy, yet they want no kill animal shelters and no death pelnalty to murders. So a baby is no better than an animal or a murderer. Funny the protesters were allowed to be born yet they don't want others born it is an inconvinience.

Senator Lucio Jr. swore to represent his constituents with public policy for all, not for himself or his church. If he cannot legislate without putting his own personal faith & feelings first, then he has no business representing the public as a Democrat. He should consider being a pastor or a Republican. Every one protesting at that rally is Pro-Life, we rally for Pro-Choice. Most of us already have children, grown and thriving as contributing adults to their communities.

People are against Anti-Choice and intrusive government which is in the Texas Constitution ( a right to privacy without government intrusion) as well. Yet, it is only upheld when it selectively suits Perry and his ilk of oppressors. Next it could be your rights removed or restricted, subtle at first then aggressively you will lose your freedoms and liberties to decide for yourselves over your own lives.

Violation of women's rights, all of Susan B. Anthony's and others down the drain thanks to Texas dictators. The bill should've focused on the abortion issue and leave alone all the other services for preventive health services (pap smears, mammograms, family planning, and others). The reason Perry is not running for re-election is that he knows there's no freaking way he'd get re-elected, and Lucio Jr is crazy if he even considers doing so.
