IS GILBERT BEHIND VAN DE PUTTE FUNDRAISER?

By Juan Montoya
We have been contacted by at least a handful of those judges listed on the Cameron County Party's combination fundraiser for Leticia Van de Putte and "Night to Honor the Cameron County Judiciary" to complain that they were never asked to authorize the inclusion of their name on the list of judges  for the event to be held Wednesday.
The event will be held at the Brownsville Historic Museum.
We had reported in an earlier post that one Cameron County Judge – 357th District Court Judge Oscar X. Garcia – was not included in the program to be honored.
Garcia apparently was never told of the event and – being a Republican – was not even asked if he cared to share the stage with his colleagues.
And since former Cameron County Judge Gilbert Hinojosa is the state chairman of the Democratic Party and his wife Cindy is the president of the county's Democratic Women's Club, many see their hidden hands behind the staging  of the event.
We have questioned the propriety of lending the name and power of a judge's office to a partisan event. On it's face, it appears that some sort of line of propriety has been breached.
It is interesting that the event comes about on the same week that The Texas Center for the Judiciary – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to provide judicial education to Texas judges – is also holding its Annual Judicial Education Conference this week (Sept. 7-10).
The nonprofit bills its instruction as necessary to fulfill the purpose of having "a qualified and knowledgeable judiciary and staff so they may administer justice with fairness, efficiency, and integrity."
For their attendance, participants will earn 12 continuing judicial education credits. By attending certain tracks participants will earn up to 5.5 hours of ethics credits and 2 hours of family violence credits.
Since the inclusion of the judges on the Van De Putte program without the approval of some of the barristers, we wonder whether any of them or their staff will ask the local Democratic party Chairperson Amber Medina to "cease and desist" compromising their position.
Looking at the canons guiding the behavior of sitting judges, it is pretty obvious that they would be prevented from hosting or lending their name to a fundraiser for a partisan candidate.
However, there seems to be nothing in the code that prevents a political party from doing the very same thing on behalf of one of their candidates. Is there such a prohibition?
If some of the district and county court-at-law judges listed on the Van de Putte program would be so gracious and take the time to ask some of the lecturers (Judge Kenneth Starr is one of them) about the propriety of Medina and Hinojosa using the names of the judiciary for the event without first asking for their consent, we would be most grateful.

Is this surprising to anyone? Gilbert Hinojosa knows nothing about ethics or morality! The Feds should have gone after him!

Behind the fund raisers are Rick Perry and TeĆ³filo de la Cruz. Another Karl Rover smash strategy !

It has just been revealed by the TIA (Texas Investigation Agency ) that Gilbert has DNA molecules from the late Doroteo Arango, a brilliant Mexican strategist; notice the striking resemblance .

I'd like to see the judges with a backbone PUBLICLY decry this event and the use of their name. Contacting this blog privately then attending this event is the equivalent of lending your name to the event. DENOUNCE IT PUBLICLY SO WE KNOW WHO THE SCUM IS AND WHO IS WORTH KEEPING NEXT ELECTION.

I wonder who took the time to lend out this conference program to this blog? Someone feeling left out? Things that make you go Hmmmm???
I don't see anything unethical about this democratic function honoring democratic judges. Nothing was violated. Republicans do the same all the time.
