There's always a new wrinkle in local politics.
Remember when Arnold Flores was running in the runoff against Sylvia Garza-Perez?
Flores had gained the endorsement of the local firefighters in his bid to replace County Clerk Joe Rivera and they put their efforts where their mouth was. Almost every weekend they staged fundraisers with chicken BBQ plates, wore Flores' T-shirts, caps, and volunteered in his campaigns events.
The firefighters stood on street corners, waved placards, and buttonholed potential voters to support their endorsee.
Flores, for his part, flirted with his supporters and in the end opted to
count on what he saw as the political powerhouse of the Lucio clan to further his political fortunes. As a former staffer with St. Rep. Eddie Lucio III, he probably though that their support was probably the sure thing and he distanced himself from the firefighters an some of those who supported him to get him into the runoff with Garza-Perez. He lost by some 763 votes.
The Lucio votes failed to materialize and Flores was left like the proverbial dog who wanted to get los dos panes and ended up with nothing.
Firefighter union president Carlos Elizondo was one of Flores' more ardent supporters.
There is, after all, a very real current of dissatisfaction with the Gilbert Hinojosa-Garza/Perez-Joe Rivera coalition that has taken over the county's Democratic Party. Many party members feel that Hinojosa, after being soundly trounced by incumbent county judge Carlos Cascos in at least two past elections (one with John Wood), is doing his utmost to unseat Cascos and has manipulated the party and its candidates to serve his need for vengeance. Cameron County, after all, is his home county. It just will not do to have a Republican win in Gilbert's home turf again.
Garza-Perez, a willing pawn, was talked into changing her candidacy from going after the county judge's position and running for Rivera's spot instead. This freed Rivera, who was seen as a stronger county judge candidate that Garza-Perez by Hinojosa, to run against Cascos.
Flores, at the outset, seemed think that this was wrong. Then, instead of facing Rivera, he fund himself running against the coalition and Garza-Perez.
This is all the backdrop to the Brownsville Independent School District election coming in November.
Elizondo – Flores' ardent supporter – is on the ballot against Robert Rodriguez. Former BISD administrator Susan Fox pulled out of the race after filing for the position.
This left Flores in a quandary. You see, Rodriguez, a longtime BISD administrator, is none other than Flores' father-in-law. When Elizondo went to see Flores about getting him to support him for the BISD board, Flores – citing his desire for domestic tranquility – said he could not.
It might have been that marital peace trumps political independence in these cases, but the propensity of Flores to eschew those who have helped him in the past is now becoming a character trait with him. Did he ask the Little Woman whether he should have accepted the endorsement of the firefighters and Elizondo personally before he accepted it? Or didn't he clear it with her and his father-in-law when he went seeking their support?
As they say in the barrio: "Pus quien manda aqui?

Arnold Flores no trai nada. He can't even run the county right. He always home babysitting on county time. Luis Saenz needs to look at thing on this Casco boy cause everyone knows Arnold and Chris are Cascos "Bad Boys" He was recorded bad mouthing Cascos name at a democratic meeting when he gave his speech but yet he is under Cascos underwear!!!
Family comes first entre la raza. If you are a politician you respect family traditions and do not expect or place any individual in a situation to go against their family. Flores did the right thing, he supported his father-in-law. On any other given day, Elizondo would have the support of Flores but not on this election. It is truly shameful of you (Juan) to have written this article. "Con la familia no te metas"
I agree if you want to write an article of betrayal don't go too far look what good old Joe did to his long time employee and not just to her but to many others that have helped him be where he is..now that is betrrayal
Éste pedazo de mier da se mete con la familia porque nunca ha tenIdo una.
wooooooooooooooooooo
Come on JUan, para que se hacen pendejos los de B.U.C.K.? It should be f.u.c.k., because of all the people they have done it to in elections. Carlos Elizondo should not be surprised, he has done what they are doing to him a lot of times. Remember all the candidates that you black mailed Carlos, all the candidates that you told you were with, only to stick a dagger in their back. You will feel what they felt my friend. They cant wait for their turn.
The Lucio family did nothing for Flores. The poor sap was played.
When you have Sergio Zarate as your campaign manager, you are in trouble out of the gate. Mr. Zarate has an unblemished record, unfortunately it is in the lose column.
Why don't you check why the BISD board gave Carlos Elizonda a $150K contract a couple of weeks ago Juanio? If he wins, is he going to relinquish the contract? Isn't that a clear conflict? why do the ladies on the board remain quiet on this issue? Something is not right here.
His nickname is Arnold the Asshole.
Hello, anybody with any common sense out there??? I bet this guys father in law was doing more than someone who he garnered the support of along the way!! Hey Juan, what did this guy do to you to write such an article?!
No mames, it's politics at its best you put your hat in the ring don't expect anything got to take the punch as it comes or step aside.Juan is doing what he always does, politics is cut throat few loyal
Minerva, BISD did not give Carlos anything, several people voted to give the company that he works for.
No pos WOW same old, same old, pura crema.
Garcia Cambodia needs to strike again .!
Arnold is right to stay and support his father in law. Did you expect him to help Elizondo? Blood is thicker than water.
I've heard Elizondo tell people that he (BUC) has supported many over the years, including unions (aka teachers). Then he says hat he EXPECTS the same support and loyalty back. Rather crappy move and expectations from Elizondo.
Mr. Flores is an honorable man. He is a veteran who served honorably and will make a great candidate.
Elizondo: as much as you've done so much for so many, you need to brush up on your statesmanship.
puro mamar if I get elected, that's my motto, use it for whats it worth and nothing else.

And you do not see the conflict, pendejo? He works for the company that was awarded monies. Is he going to resign if he wins? Dumbass!
Is his company relinquish said contract if he wins??
We would be watching you Carlos. ....
Really?! Should Flores action to support his father in law even be in question! That speaks a lot about his integrity and loyalty. I would take a family member like Flores any day ... unfortunately the same can't be said for those of you that speak differently on his choice. It's about FAMILY and ETHICS why has it been lost!
Can you make up an article now about what would have happened if he had NOT supported his father in law... exactly! At the end blood is thicker than water!
Arnold refused to be extortionated....
He stood up to Juan, that's why he's writing "bad stuff" about him.
Arnold, keep yor head up!! Just consider the source....that's what I do. Me vale!!!!!!
Yup!!!
Good for you Arnold!!!!
Arnold has nothing to offer, he knows nothing, all he knows is how to flap his fat lip and look important, he is a traiter and a very dishonest person
Let me see here, an article that goes against Flores' father in law, it must have been sent in by Elizondo's camp. Who wouldn't be on their father in laws side? This is just a cheap shot at Flores/Rodriguez but makes Elizondo look really bald...I mean bad lol
