CHISQUIADA GOWEN SPENDS MILLIONS ON BIKES: MEANWHILE THE FOLKS AT THE BARRIO BUS STOP ENDURE THE ELEMENTS

(Ed's. Note: The slang word for bicycle in the barrio is la chisca. The amount of money that   commissioner Rose Gowen is spending from every available source to construct bike trails, bike stands, and to promote the use of bicycles is climbing into the millions. Meanwhile, bus riders (mass transit to you, Rose) must endure the elements as these two women (one partially hidden by the passing truck) as best they can. There is no shelter from the sun or rain and no benches on which to rest their weary legs from the walk to the bus stop. The word on the street in the barrio? Gowen and the commissioners (including Da Mayor Tony Martinez) estan bien chisquiados!)

The Zavaleta/Zavaletta klan has never experienced mass transit and have no respect for those that are relegated to buses...not SUV's. Instead of financing safe and disabled friendly bus stops. Rose has no clue.....she is "privileged" and a Zavaleta/Zavaletta....and they are superior to all the rest of us mortals.

As of yet I haven't seen grannies/ grand folks using bicycles "trails".; by the way I haven't even seen Da Mayor either; if he has he was disguised as a ciclista. La Gowena even less.but wait! He was spotted buying a dozen egg-shape helmets for Aunt J and United Brownsville cartel aficionados. They sell 'em at Academy. .

They don't give a dam about the poor and needy. This cylcobia bullshit is out of control costing us taxpayers a lot of money in equipment, personnel and overtime. The city commission needs to focus on real issues such as street improvement, more sidewalks and providing bus shelters to the most needed areas of the city. In addition, they should also consider providing transit service on Sundays since many citizens that cannot afford a car must work on Sundays making it harder for them to find transportation.

The problem with the Zavalet(t)as is they still think they are in the Basque Country. They do not yet realize that life has played a dirty trick on them and they have ended up in the number one shit hole of mankind.

Mass transit and bicycle lanes (and trails) don't have to be an either/or proposition. And, frankly, El Rrun Rrun, I'm disappointed in you for not recognizing that.

Brownsville (like every other Texas city) has an overweight population that should be encouraged to exercise more and sit less. There also are good environmental reasons for encouraging commuters to use vehicles that don't rely on internal combustion to get to work, go shopping, etc. Finally, if you'd only look, you'll see blue-collar (mainly Mexican immigrant) men using bicycles to get to their menial jobs in Brownsville. Why should those men not have the protection of bike lanes and trails?

San Antonio, Houston, Austin and Austin are among the Texas cities that are building bike lanes and promoting bicycle use -- and not at the expense of mass transit. Brownsville should be encouraged to do the same, not condemned for creating bike lanes.

alI of these projects are good that they are involved with but don't be fooled ,they also connected themselves to the health and science dept at UTB smart but it's a way to get leads and give info to what is offered in free government health subsidies.it's a way to get them into their clinics cha -ching

Brownsville is fat. Notice how the people south of the border are skinny and active and once they get here they explode with obesity and diabetes on our overstuffed, corn syrup, artificial food product American lifestyle. The poor here are like cattle to the food stamp trough of sugar, carbs, fried junk and sugar, and more carbs. All the shit junk food no one else wants gets dumped on the food stampers because the Frito Lay and other junk manufacturers lobby hard to keep their shit product subsidized with food stamps aka tax dollars. And the uneducated parents you see around here lack the discretion to choose fruit over fritos drenched in fake yellow cheese sauce to stuff their kids faces with. The irony is that we have to pay a premium for organic, pesticide free food but artery clogging, diabetes inducing crap is cheap and if your're on food stamps, free. I for one support the bikes, perhaps not the heavyhanded way they handled introducing them to the community, but it is something good.

At times when I visit the Mall and observe Humanity in action, all I see are Basket Balls rolling down the Aisles.

Rose is overweight. She should ride a bike!

Good for you , but not everyone can or wants to ride a bike. We need covered bus stops. Imagine Brownsville investing in Brownsville. I want to believe in Brownsville. Our residents need covered bus stops.
