SO WHY HASN'T SYLVIA COME CLEAN ON HER BOND?

By Juan Montoya
For the better part of two weeks we have all wondered why Cameron County Clerk-Elect Sylvia Garza-Perez hasn't able to get an insurance company to issue the $500,000 professional performance bond required by state law for her to take  the oath of office.
And time is running out. Today, at 3:30 p.m., the county commissioners will meet at the Dancy Building to see whether she or her attorney Ron Armstrong can provide the bond or an explanation on why the county taxpayers should provide self-insurance to the tune of $400,000.
If it doesn't fly, she will not be able to take the oath of office January 1.
In the absence of any clear explanation from her on why that is, speculation has flowed.
Did she default on a large loan with a lender? Did she co-sing for someone who defaulted themselves? Was she involved in some way is some criminal activity like, say, embezzlement, that  might have resulted in someone's conviction? Did she turn state's evidence? If so, what was her role that it would result in insurance companies refusing to issue the sureties that are required before an elected official can take the oath of office?
So many questions, so few answers.
Today, expect Cameron County commissioners to grill Ms. Garza-Perez on the reason why she can't get bonded.
As we read it right now, there is not a majority on the board that will agree to have the county self-inure her to the tune of $400,000. She has been able to secure only $100,000 herself and the rumors are that there will be another $400,000 put up by four other individuals.
This means that if those people do business with the county, the specter of a conflict of interest will forever loom large over them and her.
And just suppose that something does happen and there is some liability to the county because of her performance in office. Which of the four individuals or the companies issuing the sureties will take the lead in making good on the loss?
Garza-Perez has refused to come clean on the reason why she has not been able to get bonded.
In an interview with Emma Perez-TreviƱo, she told her that she didn't know why the companies had refused to issue the bond other that "they didn't tell me why it wasn't approved."
Then, she added that "we run into obstacles in our lives and this is one of those."
While that may satisfy some of her supporters, that isn't going to be good enough the commissioners who expect answers before they can vote to shell out the money for her sureties or to blindly accept them in someone else's name. One thing they will not do, we have heard, is to expose the county to $400,000 in liability. Despite the numerous calls to commissioners on her behalf, it simply cannot be sold to the voters of the county.
Telling the truth would be a whole lot simpler.

Because this so-called candidate who should have known about the requirement and the fact that she did not qualify for a Bond "JUST" deceived her supporters for a position that she obviously only wants for a pay check and prestige. Did she think her lawsuit which I find suspicious was going to be settled before taking office and that would have gotten her a bond? Anyway, it seems that she was hired very suspiciously by Joe Rivera, no surprise> Her family must have chingos of voters?

Montoya, it is the job of reporters, like you, to find the answers to the questions you asked.

Her biggest problem is that she has a gringo lawyer.
