NEW COMMISSION MAJORITY GELLING AROUND DE LEON?

By Juan Montoya
As some pundits attempt to be flippant about the results of the city election saying that instead of "all out" the incumbents were "all in," there is quite a bit of fudging in their writing.
To begin with, At-Large "A" winner Cesar de Leon not only devastated his rivals, but also was the clear winner in the overall election getting about 800 votes more than the next highest, Da Mayor Tony Martinez.
The uncanvassed totals, minus the 83 provisional votes yet to be counted, stand at 4,445 for de Leon versus 3,583 for Martinez.
Effort to pigeon-hole him as a Abraham, Galonsky plant and a dupe of Martinez's camp did not resonate with the voters and de Leon's well-honed political campaign team befuddled the so-called experts by getting the voters to darken the oval more times than did Movement, Action, and Performance, the high-priced outfit from Austin that ran Martinez's campaign. This time, however, Martinez did not make it without a runoff and overwhelm his five opponents.
Now, with Ahumada (1,417 votes) being endorsed by Robert Sanchez (812), can Erasmo Castro be far behind with his 1,211 votes to team up William Garza (760) and Brenda Joyas (439) with the anti-incumbents against Martinez (3,538)?
The voters apparently appreciated the new approach that encompassed the usual political guideposts and opinion leaders with a strong middle-class and grassroots-level bases that proved too much for his opponents.
De Leon will not have to be in  a runoff either even though there were three other candidates.
Unless the 25 provisional votes cast in District 2 change the final standings, Jessica Tetreau will now have an opportunity to form a new majority with John Villarreal, de Leon and the eventual winner of the District 1 runoff between Ricardo Longoria and Roman Perez (eight provisional votes there) as the fourth vote,
If the voters had really wanted to keep the incumbents "All In," there would have been no need for a runoff election between Martinez and Pat Ahumada or between Longoria and Roman Perez. And the fact that Tetreau barely squeezed by Sergio Zarate 1,048 to 1,029 – a difference of 19 votes well within the 25 provisional votes yet to be counted – can be interpreted as a wake-up call for the incumbents that they no longer enjoy the unquestionable support from the electorate.

By the grace of God, Zarate lost. That would have been a holistic nightmare had he won.

There are only 25 provisional ballots in the Zarate race, not 83. I hope Zarate does ask for a recount though, we need to make sure no mistakes were made.

He doesn't have money . ...to pay his taxes, you think he can afford to pay for a recount ? Ugh !

There will be a tally recount, good for Mr. Zarate...

LNG and its supporters in United Brownsville will all nuzzle up to their puppet, Tony Martinez, and will likely use this to pad Tony's "Believe in Brownsville" motto (obviously stolen from BISD) to cause voters to forget about Tony's diasterous and costly first term....a debt that Tony would like to ignore, but a debt that will remain as a fiscal burden on taxpayers.

You can't say that he got more votes than the mayor really. He did on paper but you have to remember that there were only 4 candidates running for At Large 'A', while mayor had 6. Apples and oranges Juan. I went to go vote for the mayor, but checked Leon's box because his campaign was better than the other At Large candidates (I saw his face on more signs).

Ok now that election is over, PLEASE REMOVE ALL VISUAL GARBaGE. You may leave Martinez and Ahumada, Perez and Longoria, but everyone else I hope you get ticketed big time. ITS TIME TO CLEAN UP your signs. REMOVAL TIME!!

You voted for him because his campaign was better than the other candidates, his face was on more signs? Great logic. Please don't vote next time.
