We now have three (count them, three) candidates for the position of Cameron County Precinct 1.
With the appointment of his treasurer, Fausto "El Pato" Martinez has decided to join incumbent Sofia Benavides and first-time candidate and challenger Bea Rosenbaum for a place on the Democratic ballot for the primary election March 1.
Martinez, a Southmost business man, had previously run for the same position four years ago.
All three candidates who have announced so far live in or near the Southmost area.Benavides has held the position since 2006 when she was appointed to replace her late husband Pete Benavides who dies before his term expired.
There have also been some indications that yet another candidate will throw hi hat in the ring before the Dec. 14 deadline to file with the Democratic Party for a place on the a ballot.
Precinct 1 is one of the most demographically and socio-economically diverse jurisdictions, with an area encompassing two international bridges, the Port of Brownsville, Boca Chica Beach, The Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Texas Southmost College, South Padre Island, and parts of downtown Brownsville.
It runs along the Rio Grande west to Palm Blvd., then to Boca Chica Blvd, angles north on Old Port Isabel Road across Coffeeport Road, and then east to FM 511 and then continues on to Highway 100, skirts around Port Isabel, and encompasses all of South Padre Island.

you can damn well bet that South Padre Island money will not go to Benavidez or Rosenbaum, both of whom are carrying water for the LNG plants. someone from the Island should run against these sellout candidates.
Juan im glad to see another candidate jump into this race besides the incumbent the other one the spouse of the former commissioner and now fausto el pato martinez, good gives the voters a choice. Word of warning to el pato, dont trust anyone associated with the cameron county democratic party, they are out to screw anyone who doesnt belong to their little club the gang, the clic whatever you call it beware of gilberto hinojete, juan magallenes joe rivera son pura maroma.
