No one knew last Charro Days that the head of the Cameron County District Attorney's Office Public Integrity Unit Victor Cortez would be running for sheriff in 2016.
No one, apparently, except his boss DA Luis V. Sanez.
People wondered why the DA Twins (in matching outfits including the cute red bolo ties) were glad-handing in the parade route.
Within the next two months, the DA's Office would cut a deal with Pct. 2 Ernie Hernandez that would let him slide off seven counts of official misconduct and one count of coercion of a government official.
Now we hear that the hard work that Cortez and Saenz had put into getting Ernie to resign in face of a potential prison sentence is all for naught since Hernandez has been telling everyone far and wide that he is running for his old position if incumbent Alex Dominguez resigns to run for county judge.
Was it a cold calculation on their part?
It doesn't seem to have worked since Hernandez has made it plain that Caros Masso is his candidate for the DA's Office primary in March.
And Cortez, by the way, initiated the campaign against then-Rio Hondo Police Chief John Chambers, his opponent in the Republican nomination for sheriff.
His sidekick George DeLaunay is now carrying the torch and after dismissing several cases against Cortez's political opponent, now has had him indicted on yet another.
Is DeLaunay carrying water for Cortez's campaign against Chambers? After all, former DEA brothers have to cover each other's backs, right?
We don;t know whether the Terrible Twins will show up in matching outfits again this February, but if their media consultant PIO Melissa Landin has her way they probably will. It doesn;t matter that Sanez is running as a Democrat and Cortez as a Republican. La chiche es la misma.

They should check if tax payers are paying$ for Cortez campaign signs, now that his buddy Luis Saenz got the money approved for those large billboards along the highway! Maybe they were done in the same print shop!!!!!!!!

I wonder if taxpayers or forfeited funds paid for cortez $365,000 home he bought in February in Bayview? Check the tax appraisal records..they are public...
