Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre and his chief of Auto Theft Task Force Joe Mireles were arrested and taken into custody in handcuffs by members of the joint task force composed of local, county, state and federal agents.
Two others named in related indictments were also chagred.
Later in the day, jail records show that Yzaguirre, Mireles and the two others –
Pedro Garza amd Omar Sanchez-Paz,were ordered released on personal recognizance bond by Magistrate Alfredo Padilla. Prosecutors, apparently, did not object to the PR bond.
A county grand jury issued indictments against them Wednesday. The fact that Mireles, in charge of the auto theft task force, was also arrested indicted to some that it may have to do something with the issuance of titles and registrations for automobiles.
The arrests took place late Wednesday morning at the Cameron County Courthouse Administrative wing.
Sources say that the arrests took place at the same time as did a raid on Loma Alta Development, a real-estate firm owned by former Tax-Assessor Collector's Office employee Tony Menchaca, and three other businesses. Menchaca was arrested last October after investigators – armed with a grand jury indictment – ecured a warrant for Tampering with Government Records.
Menchaca turned himself in and was given a $5,000 dollar bond.
Yzaguirre was charged with:
Four counts of bribery, a second-degree felony
Engaging in organized criminal activity, a first-degree felony
Official oppression, a Class A misdemeanor
Mireles was charged with:
- Bribery, a second-degree felony
- Engaging in organized criminal activity, a first-degree felony
- Official oppression, a Class A misdemeanor
- Bribery, a second-degree felony

Started in February 2014, investigators called the case "Operation Dirty Deeds," according to the news release.
Investigators executed search warrants at the Tax Assessor-Collector's Office, four businesses and two homes.
And even before the men were arraigned and a magistrate set their bonds, some were already saying that they would probably be allowed to post it through the county's Pre-Trial Release program.
"They'll probably get a 3 percent bond approved by the magistrates," one said.
Later, it was learned Padilla had set the PR bonds.

I would like to say I am surprised and shocked, but that would be a lie. Everybody that runs for public office, everybody that hold public office and everybody that works for an office holder is presumed to be crooked in Cameron County. There may be a few honest ones, but they don't stand out from the crowd of crooks.
It has been this way for generations and will continue to be this way until there is a change of thinking and attitudes by the voters who swallow their crap. It is Mexican thinking and it is not likely to change. It just isn't a few corrupt people, but a culture of corruption that expects and even requires their officials to be corrupt.
The shame of this should be felt by every voter in Cameron County, for it is indeed their fault. You expect and tolerate corruption at every level, so just who is to blame?

Again; Cameron County Demokrats don't just accept corruption, they demand it. Let's just hope others are indicted....perhaps Aurora de la Garza, because she is surely vulnerable. Sure brings questions of who else knew or participated with this corruption.

Also one notices the involvement of the Feds, FBI, AG or Rangers is required to force him take action. Without the feds looking over his shoulder, Saenz spent the last 4 years letting crooks go. Judges taking bribes, Ernie giving out jobs to his family, politiqueras bragging about selling votes and being untouchable. He will get my vote once people go to prison.
