AT TSC, OP 10.33 HEDGES BETS, GIVES TO TREY, CANTU

By Juan Montoya
Ruben Herrera has not accepted contributions in his race for the Place 5 position with Texas Southmost College. So far, he reported he has spent $9.047 of his own money on his campaign.
Neither (except for a $100 donation) has Dr. Tony Juarez in the Place 3 position. Juarez reported he has spent $3,594 so far.
On the other hand, Trey Mendez, running for reelection for the Place 4 spot on the board reported he has spent $4,367 and received $6,725 in contributions.
Evelyn Cantu, a BISD staffer who headed the Brownsville Municipal Youth Ambassador Program, reported she has raised $1,300 and loaned herself $21,000. So far, she reported she has spent $14,231.
As far as campaign finance reporting goes, at least four candidates have been somewhat lackadaisical and have yet to file their report. They are Dr. Anthony Zavaleta, Beatriz Hockaday, Daniel Pizaña, and J.J. De Leon. The reports (for 30 days before the election) were due April 6.
However, from the reports that are available, it is apparent that some of the contributors are hedging their bets to get into the good graces of some of the candidates.
Immediately after OP 10.33 office staffer Hockaday filed against Mendez, the group's marketing director asserted that she was not their candidate and were not endorsing anyone in the TSC race. Apparently, Hockaday took the message of OP 10.33 Mike Hernandez III about getting involved in local politics to heart and filed thinking she would be getting her boss' support.
Not to be.
Lacking her campaign report, we have no way of knowing whether Hernandez threw some cash her way, but as if to make up for her indiscretion, Hernandez did contribute $2,500 to Mendez' campaign chest as dis OP 10.33 job developer Carlos Marin, also owner of Ambiotec Engineering, the engineering firm that holds a virtual monopoly on local municipal contracts. Marin is also one of the founders of United Brownsville.
Former Brownsville Navigation District commissioner and businessman Mario Villarreal and his daughter Ana both contributed $1,000 to Trey.
That had been expected as had been announced in other quarters, but the reports also indicate that Marin and other movers and shakers also have an interest in the race for the Place 5 position between Zavaleta, Juarez, Cantu and De Leon.
Until Hockaday, Zavaleta and De Leon file their reports, we won't know who is backing them financially. But we were mildly surprised at the contributors to Cantu's campaign.
Would you believe that Cantu got $250 from Carlos Marin and another $250 from his wife Elena, a physician and CEO of Su Clinica Familiar. Cantu also got $500 from former TSC trustee Mary Rose Cardenas in January and another $200 from her in February. Her only other contribution cam from Julie Gonzalez, manager at GT Paving.
It should be noted that Su Clinica is a sponsor of the Brownsville Municipal Youth Ambassador Program, where Cantu has made presentations.
Cardenas, who has a building named after her at TSC, was a strong opponent of the separation of TSC from the UTB "partnership" and she may want to have a voice if Cantu gets elected. Marin and OP 10.33 just seem to be hedging their bets.

"Place 5 position between Zavaleta, Juarez, Cantu and De Leon."
That is Place 3. Place 5 is between Herrera and Pizaña.

Marin donated $1,000 to trey. Not $2.500.

Trey is a former student of mine, Reuben is a long time friend and Tony Zavaleta is both friend and former colleague. In each case, I have little doubt that my politics are quite different from all of theirs, but nonetheless, I know and respect each of them, and I also know that our Community College seems to be drifting these days and is need of a strong Board willing to turn things around. Each of the men I have named has something to contribute. I believe that they all mean well for TSC, and collectively, they represent a wealth of perspectives and experience. Change is needed, and these are the individuals who can accomplish it!

Any chance Carlos Marin is related to Cheech?

If I remember correctly, in "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie," he got a visit from a cousin from Texas, named Red.
Think Carlos needs a good toque!

What is your fascination with OP1033? It is simple to get the facts from OP, all you need to do is ask.
The facts are boring so you prefer to present false narratives for readers. Shame on you.

Anonymous at 8:46.........What is YOUR fascination with OP1033 ? The only false narrative being presented is by that shadow white collar criminal group. What has Carlos Marin ever done for the taxpayers in return for the millions he has gotten? "CORRUPTION AND OPPORTUNITY " is exactly their philosophy .

White collar criminals? Name the crime. Facts please.

Toque? As in a spliff also known as a joint or as in an electrical shock?

U.N.I.T.E.D. B.R..O.W.N.S.V.I.L.L.E. , Expensive and worthless studies, two unnecessary industrial parks, Rose Gowen, Juliet and Oscar (special place reserved in Hell) Debbie Portillo, and now OP1033 under the guise of "changing the culture of corruption" that profited him so well.

To annon. at 7:39 - a good joint and maybe he'll "go up in smoke"!
