YOUNG PUGILIST FROM COMMUNITY BOXING CLUB WINS

(Ed.'s Note: A while back we featured a small post on the Southmost area Community Boxing Club which was formed by former professional boxers and has been training young pugilists for the past 17 years. This past weekend, Raul Vallejo Jr, walked away with a champion's belt in competition with up Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi fighters. Young Vallejo faced Andrew Lugo and beat him three rounds to zero to claim his belt. That's his uncle Eddie Vallejo posing with him. The elder Vallejo single-handedly placed Brownsville on the map when he paid his own way to fight for a championship in Scotland. The group has a open-air ring and gym on Esperanza Road just before you get to the levee heading south. Congrats, Raulito!)

The elder Vallego is a amateur,he did not put Brownsville on the map. It was boxers like "Mantequilla" Jaime Lopez and Mike Garza (Former World Champ) who put Brownsville and RGV on the map back in the 70's. Any of these three guys can teach Vallego a thing or two about the world of Boxing.Nobody in RGV knows the ring better than these 3 guys. Remember the fight between "Mantequilla and Sammy Ayala" the notorious "Ayala Brothers" from San Antonio. Mantequilla from Brownsville, what a fight! But i'm glad Vallego is doing good for kids.
