A VERY POLITICAL MAMA'S DAY: DID ESTELA PAY FOR MEAL?

(Ed.'s Note: We were somewhat taken aback when we got this sent to us. On its face it's a photo of Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz and his wife and brother Mario celebrating Mother's Day with the family matriarch. But then someone pointed out to us that as of the last election, Mario is feeling his oats as a political kingmaker. That is evidenced by the fact that he is wearing a T-shirt with the Estela Chavez-Vasquez campaign logo as well as a campaign button. Chavez-Vasquez is in a runoff with attorney Chuy Garcia for the new Cameron County Court-at-Law #5. The reader who sent the Facebook photo in wondered if the holiday dedicated to sacred motherhood is really the appropriate venue to be campaigning for a political candidate. We have expressed our apprehension of relatives of the DA (and Luis himself, we assume) supporting candidates for judgeships because inevitably, cases will show up in that court to a judge who is indebted to the DA (or his family). How will the defendant in these cases fare? And, the reader asks more pointedly, did Estela pay for the plate lunch to have Mario wear her campaign stuff?)

It will be a sad day in court if Estela wins for whomever has a case before her...how can the defendant think their attorney will get a fair ruling knowing that the Judge there will owe her seat to the DA!!! If she wins, she will owe it to the Saenz clan and how will she pay them back...by ruling in favor of the State EVERYTIME!!!! How is that fair as she so adamantly states that she is,...FAIR...not when you owe a favor to the DA.

DA BLIMP got it all wrong, Juan! Vato panson y fe, el guey! ja ja ja

Sir, I believe that Chavez is running for comissioner, not judge. This would make the connection suggested by the article between a DA and the judgeship moot, I believe. That said, I'm voting for whom I consider the underdog, Chuy.

A vote for Estela Vasquez is a vote for incompetency and a Luis Saenz puppet. No one will have a fair chance or trial in a court that will be owed to the district attorney and his brother.

Estela Chavez could not even complete a term as a city commissioner! Where was her committment to the people? She couldn't wait a year longer to build her mansion and move out of town after committing to the citizens of Brownsville for her term? She also voted to sell Lincoln Park for pennies on the dollar! She also voted to purchase casa de nylon for an outragously inflated price! She claims to have the experience needed to be judge...well explain exactly what makes you experienced! last I checked, being a member of clubs and having no real trial experience or prosecutorial experience meant you LACK the experience needed to be judge. She may be qualified with a law degree but her ability to be a judge is NOT there! The only thing she is doing is buying her way in with all her photo shopped signs that i can't wait to see taken down! Luis Saenz I thought you were better than this! Backing a judicial candidate out in the open and at gatherings around the county is just unethical!

Its an insult to all judges past and present calling Estela a judge

Chavez Vasquez is NOT running for Commissioner....she WAS a Brownsville City commissioner but abandoned her seat prior to her term ending...she is now running for JUDGE of County Court 5. So yes, for the DA Saenz, who by the way is wearing his stupid office shirt, to be supporting her and backing her is very unethical. Although he has not publicly endorsed her, his brother Mario Saenz did, we all know that one scum bag doesn't make a move with out the other scum bags blessing. How does anyone, if she were to win, expect to get any type of FAIR ruling. Or maybe Luis Saenz knows his niece and nephew will screw up yet again, and have their cases transferred to her court, (If she wins) and what will she do then, rule in favor of the State and give them another break, or will she do what she did to the Brownsville firefighters association, promise them the moon and stars when she ran for commish to get their endorsement and support to get her elected and then what happens....the first city commission meeting she was in, she voted against all the firefighters! slap on the face for them, maybe a slap on the face for Luis too...just wait and see.

Was this another meeting she missed?

To 'May 12, 2016 at 10:32 AM' I thought she was running for county comissioner, not judge, Thanks for pointing this out, in which case this is worse than I thought. Chuy seems like a better option based on experience, also, Estela gives me the impression she owes alot of favors, i.e. Sell out.

Chuy is the underdog so I am voting for him.

After her performance at the debate, she clearly is NOT AT ALL qualified to be a judge in this or any other county! She even admitted she needs to go to training to learn how the courtroom works! How can anyone be considering voting for this joke of a person who is clearly buying her way through this election. She failed the people of Brownsville, she fails her clients and WILL fail as a judge. Don't waste your vote on such an inexperienced person, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia Jr her opponent may not be much to look at but at least he is well qualified and experienced to be a judge so he has my vote. Esta loca can go back to reading her speeches and trying to memorize what she is suppose to know off hand. She thought by yelling at the crowd at the debate she would seem somehow more qualified and the better candidate, what a joke, Mario should have written her something better than that for what she is paying him.

I heard the debate, very sad that she was the ONLY candidate in all races that actually sat there reading and reading and reading her papers! Yes most of them had a file or notes, except for Dan Robles and Chuy Garcia, that I can remember, but she made it very ovious that she was not speaking from the heart as she so claims. There was a part in the debate where she said "my opponent talks about all his qualifications, but what good is it if he has no community service..." so let's put it like this, she talked about her "proven track record" for all the community service she's done, well what good is all her community service if she quit as a city commissioner! What good is all her community involvement if she voted to sell Lincoln Park, that doesn't look well on someone who has a "proven track record" for community involvement. There is one track record she keeps, it's the one of joining clubs just while she's running for office. She joined the Brownsville Rotary club when she ran for city commish, went to 1 meeting and never paid her fees, they kicked her out! She decided to ask to join this time around that she was running for judge and they told her NO!!

I guess that $1000 paid to Mario Saenz by Estela Chavez included weekends and holidays too! People need to realized Mario doesn't think she is the best candidate, she is the only candidate that wanted to pay him his fee of $1000 to back her in public and tell everyone she is the best choice. Sad, Sad, Sad little Estela, you have to pay people to pretend they like you and to tell others what you want them to believe. If you were to stand on your own two feet you know there is no way you would win as a judge here or any where else! having to take seminars to learn how a courtroom works?! damn, didn't you feel bad filing to run as a judge knowing you did not even know how to pick a jury or run a courtroom, oh wait, maybe being a part of community clubs makes it ok? Jokes on you when your paid supporters really aren't supporting you to their real friends and family! bet you didn't know that!
