By Juan Montoya
We have been saddened to hear about the passing this morning of our friend and fellow coffee-shop group member Fernando De Peña.
We had just seen him about a week ago and he was recovering from one-heart surgery and looked a little wan. A great hart stopped beating this morning, his friends and family said.
Fernando was a great educator, as those of us who took one of his history classes at Hanna High School remember. He was slo one of the few Hispanics who was actually a Texas A&M cadet at a time when they weren't exactly welcomed by the 12th Fan at College Station.
After he retired from the school district, he established a successful insurance company.
We extend our condolences to his mate Graciana de Peña, another educator who went on to serve several terms as a trustee with the school board of the Brownsville Independent School District.
We lost a good one today. We'll see you on the other side Fernando.
