TELEVISA PICKS NEW MR. AMIGO, AND AGAIN, CONTROVERSY

By Juan Montoya
We have now gotten used to have some leading man or starlet from a Mexican novela series in the Televisa stable be named as Mr. Amigo.

This year, the selection by the Mr. Amigo selection committee threw in a different wrinkle. Instead of having a novela heart throb, we now have an executive of the Mexican broadcast company, Fernando Landeros, founder and president of the Telethon Foundation of Mexico, named Mr. Amigo 2016.
Landeros held the first “Teleton Mexico” in 1997.

That fundraising event is produced by Televisa and administered by the Telethon Foundation.
Its aims are to raise money for the construction and maintenance of Child Rehabilitation Centers to treat children and youth with disabilities, cancer and autism (CRIT, in Spanish). The foundation currently has 22 rehabilitation centers.

No sooner was Landeros named the new Mr. Amigo and announced in Mexico City with a stellar cast made up of dignitaries and elected officials from Brownsville and Matamoros, than the questions began.
"Who's this person?," asked one commenter.
"Well, he is the chairman of the Teleton foundation in Mexico. Yes, the same one closely associated with Televisa and been rumored in hot water with Secretaria de Credito Publico the IRS counterpart in Mexico. Teleton has been forced to close and cut short operations in Mexico because the people doesn't believe in this foundation."
And the criticism doesn't stop there. Even the current Mr. Amigo president – Ricardo Garza – was game for scrutiny.

"Richard Garza Mr. Amigo President is in hot water with the IRS. He owes more than $600,000 he has opened many clinics around the valley borrowing money from medical professionals and government funds just to close them when his lavish life style dries out the loans or grants," the accusers said.
Among other things, Garza was said to have been evicted for non payment of in Port Isabel, that the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts had him resigned from his position, as had the San Benito ISD.

According to the Mr. Amigo Association, Mr. Amigo must be someone who "promotes the improvement of quality of life in the Hispanic community and serves as a role model for citizens of Mexico and the United States."
He or she must be a Mexican citizen who has contributed to “friendship and understanding” between the two countries, and exemplifies high standards and has excelled in his or her professional life.

Monday’s announcement at Texas Southmost College ITEC was held in concert with an announcement in Mexico City at which Landeros was present along with Brownsville city officials.

Present at the Mexico City function was the mayor and federal representative from Matamoros as well as city commissioners Cesar de Leon and Ricardo Longoria. City manager Charlie Cabler – who thankfully did not speak in Spanish – was also present.
Lately, it seems that Longoria has been given a wide latitude to stay away from his job at the Brownsville Independent School District with jaunts to Sintra, Portugal last month and now to Mexico City where the former Spanish teacher tried out his best Spanish.

To his credit, de Leon took the opportunity to invite Landeros to open up a CRIT clinic in the Rio Grande Valley.

The first Mr. Amigo celebration was held in 1964 and now takes place every year during Charro Days at the end of February.

The first Mr. Amigo was former Mexican president Miguel Aleman. Other honorees have included Mario “Cantinflas” Moreno, Vicente Fernandez, Raul Velasco, Lola Beltran, Tito Gulzar, Juan Gabriel, Lucia Mendez, Lucha Villa, Armando Manzanero, Jose Jose, Angelica Vale and Arath de la Torre.

SBCISDRichard Garza, the owner of ISD Managed Care Services (ISD MCS) and soon-to-be former on-site health care provider for San Benito CISD employees continues to raise allegations against the school district after being provided a 60-day termination notice.
As previously reported, the SBCISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved submitting said notice to ISD MCS at a special meeting on Wednesday, April 30 following concern with an Internal Revenue Service lien in excess of $315,000 that was placed on the district’s future payments to Garza. According to district officials, Garza owed just over $315,000 to the IRS, the second occurrence in less than a year’s time as Garza’s tax troubles incurred the district a $60 levy last summer.

The UN also warned about the forced sterilization of disabled children in Hope Home centers.

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) urged the Mexican government to avoid donating money to the charity organization known as Teleton, the biggest NGO in the country for handicapped people.

The CRPD also urged the government to develop its own state social programs for people with disabilities and warned that Teleton advertisements promote stereotypes against handicapped people.

The CRPD also warned of the forced sterilization of handicapped children in centers managed by Hope Home (Casa Hogar Esperanza), another NGO that is related to Teleton.

“The committee is concerned that much of (public) resources for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities are in a private management entities such as Teleton" CRPD

“The committee is concerned that much of (public) resources for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities are in a private management entities as Teleton. The committee also notes that the campaign promotes stereotypes of people with disabilities as objects of charity,” says the CRPD statement published on Friday.

Each year, Teleton and Televisa, the biggest media company in Latin America, unite and hold a massive live TV 24 hour broadcast to encourage the Mexican population to donate money to Teleton.

Both federal and several local governments each year donate millions of pesos to the foundation, that has more than 15 rehabilitation centers all over the country. The donations several times are terrains and equipment.

However, since it was created more than 10 years ago, Teleton has been severely criticized and accused of “facilitating” tax evasion and fraud for several important companies. None of these allegations have yet been proven.

AGAIN, Mcallen will have a BETTER Border Fest.
I have NOT gone to a Charro Days parade or any activities during that week since Veronica Castro was Ms. Amiga and that was in the 1990's! Besides, with D. Trump as president, Charro Days SHOULD BE re invented, re named. This town is being left behind because starting with our local leadership to our entertainment leadership. God! What am I saying, THERE IS NO LEADERSHIP in our city.

For Longoria this is a business trip ...as every year

Why not think about "El Chapo" for Mr. Amigo next year. Corruption has even infected our Charro Days celebration. Of course, most of the parties don't involve Mr. Amigo and most celebrants won't know him and won't care....party hearty!

You should see the list of people who have turned them down.

Eliseo Davila is a control freak. He should go to work instead of always wanting to party on the tax payer's dime. He smells like cat urine.

The Mr. Amigo group is a joke. They ran out of choices. A bunch of unknowns. But they still want to go to Mexico to wine and dine on other people's money. Bunch of self-serving free loaders and narcissists.

Cesar de Leon is the Epitome of the free loader.

Did you ?

This shouldn't be about financial issues. We should look at who Richard is bringing down and what Mr. Amigo stands for. They easily could've picked a star but instead Richard picked Mr. Landeros, a man which if you look at it, has created such a positive impact in our community. Let's give this board a chance.

PLEASE EXPLAIN IN DETAIL AND WITH FACTS what Landeros has done in the Brownsville-Matamoros area to create such a "positive" impact.
FACT NOT FICTION PLEASE>

Richard picked Mr. Landeros ?

Brownsville continues to be a joke. I am going to the mcallen events for Christmas to see the cowboys. They know how to do a parade up there.

Anonymous said...

Agree. Specifically Commissioner Longoria, every year he's in the picture

I love when it rains heavily during charro days. Love it when they cancel the children's parade when it's to cold at 70 degrees. Sombrerro festival will be audited some day and this will expose the mass internal theft and corruption. Lots of cash being shoved into pockets of the directors. You are going to get caught ratas!

I agree. He's "at-large" and hasn't contributed to downtown, jobs, or anything meaningful. He is the self proclaimed ambassador to Mexico but hasn't accomplished anything over there either like his buddy ahumada. His voters regret voting for him and the city employees can't stand the diva fits he throws. One-term commissioner for sure.

For Diva De Leon is all about Him, The same as Richard and his wife Nancy, They are use to live on any one else dime but theirs.
Richard now is planning a trip to Los Angeles to do a "Formal presentation of the Mr. Amigo"? Why did you to Mexico City?
Ahh I forgot everything is in the Mr. Amigo and City of Brownsville dime it's ok ratas!

Agree Longoria no vale madres

Agree Ahumada is a thief

Agree Richard Garza is a thief, he closed his clinic in Port Isabel from one day to another. Employees have not received a paycheck since last month, and he is hiding from them. THIEF
