(Ed.'s Note: Everyone in Harlingen wondered whether Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño or some other important personage in the county corps had passed away because of the profusion of county vehicles from the Road and Bridge precincts parked at the Del Angel Funeral Home there.One of our two Harlingen readers sent in the photos and his questions on the natter.
Turns out that it wasn't Treviño, but rather, Ruben Gonzalez Jr., the road supervisor, who died after a lingering illness. We are told that Harlingen and San Benito precincts, as well as those in Brownsville, were allowed to attend the funeral, funeral mass at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, do a drive through to his home, be present at the funeral procession that passed by his home and road precinct barn, and finally on to the burial at the cemetery.
One commissioner told us that it was appropriate and likened it to the burial of a police officer where his fellows on the department are allowed time off to send him on his way.
Well, it's a stretch since Gonzalez had only been supervisor for about three years before he passed on. In fact, he was the highest paid employee in the department.The county's entire road and bridge crews will probably spend the morning seeing Ruben off in Harlingen before returning to work in their respective precincts.
Our reader said that as much as he could appreciate the thought of paying respects to your boss, it's probably a questionable expenditure of manpower and county assets to honor a mid-level employee with public funds. There have been county employees who have worked for decades who don't merit this attention. Attending could have been voluntary in their own private vehicles, he said.
