IS BISD SUPPORTING THE "STOP THE ROAD" GROUP?

By Juan Montoya
Sources close to the Brownsville Independent School District administration are denying that the district is taking a stand on the 'Stop the Road" movement being orchestrated by the Brownsville Wellness Coalition.

The fliers started appearing in the Lakeway Subdivision are in advance of anti-road meeting that will be held Thursday at Yturria Elementary.

A previous meeting at the school was held Nov. 11.

"The district is merely renting them the space to hold their meetings," said a source close to the administration who requested anonymity.

"The way the fliers are designed showing a boy holding a stop sign has led some to believe that the district's school children are against the road. That plus the fact that they are meeting at an elementary school might lead some to believe that the district has taken a stand on this issue."

The Wellness Group is a non-profit group and is best known for pushing for the City of Brownsville to establish a farmers' market at the linear park in front of the federal court house. They also hold instructional sessions to teach people how to cook healthy foods.

But they are also on record as being against the construction of a road on the old Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way transferred to Cameron County. For years, the county, the city, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have been studying the construction of the West Side Loop to decrease traffic congestion in the city and provide for quicker access to the expressway (E-I69, U.S. 77'83, etc).

However, members of the Stop the Road group – among whose members are individuals close to bike-and-hike trail advocate city commissioner Rose Gowen  and healthy-eating guru Rose Timmer – are pressuring city and county officials to stop its construction.

The critics of the group say that the group is trying to fly under the colors of the BISD to make it seem as if the children and administration espouse their stand against the road.

"Some may think that this manipulation of the symbols –a kid with a stop sign and the use of the elementary for their meetings – reflects the position of the BISD. It does not. We are merely renting the space for them to meet and meeting our responsibilities to allow groups in the community to associate peacefully and petition the government for redress of their grievances."

This group surely understands the nuances of using the kid with the sign in their posters. Having their meetings in a BISD facility. All this gives parents, teachers and the community the idea that all this is for the kids. It is not. It is just a group trying to manipulate and mislead the public in order to achieve their goals. With all the bike and running trails in the city, when will it end? We see some people on these trails, but not enough to make bike and hike trails such a priority in the city. When we stop using bike lanes for parking and turn lanes, then we might really see what our needs are. Here we build it, but nobody comes.

I live in Lakeway and welcome the road. They are trying to shove the trail down our throats. It could help alleviate traffic in and around the Walmart area. Also allow for commercial growth. Watch out with this Zamarripa character who is passing out this information for the bike trail. Follow the money!!!

Since when does BISD rent out spaces at elementary schools for meetings? How long have they been doing this and who has been collecting the money and where is it going?

Yes Follow the money. Bridge tolls money that is. The privately owned B&M bridge would become our most popular, stripping county an city owned bridges of millions in toll revenue.

Stop this road.

I know this doesn't belong her on this thread, but I want to know why in the hell Erasmo Castro is allowed to eat lunch at all this different bisd schools. Is he a volunteer? I think the video he put with Veterans principal Dr.Gallegos eating lunch is bad taste. Is he a special appointed Bids member that has a free pass to go to any school he chooses

Brownsville needs roads not bikes and hike trails for no one to used them. The stop the road people have been wasting taxpayers monies for things that not needed in Brownsville. Millions of dollars for creating problems for the majority of citizens who need more transportation Ave. These jokers are idiots of Brownsville that have done more harm to the people of Brownsville, keep up the bad work.

People - Brownsville's first true multi-million dollar mixed-use-development with stacked residences and large retail anchors, including a new multi-level Macy's and Full-Service Hotel & Conference Center is planned for that land to the west of Home Depot on Morrison Road - think phase 1 of the Domain project in Austin, that's what they are planning on building there - they NEED that road. If they don't get that road this project will be delayed even further. The developers even mentioned it in the Brownsville Herald yesterday: "a road/trail between Alton Gloor and Ruben Torres would make possible a first-class commercial development that combines retail, residential and lifestyle features that would be a major boon to the community". This new "mall" will essentially be a threat to Sunrise Mall if and when it's completed. They need to come to a compromise - Retail and dining options that are only available in Hidalgo County are planned for that development - this project MUST get done.

We had two malls in Brownsville and it failed . Let's do it again cause look around in Brownsville and you will see some many empty rental buildings every where. Going out business sign should be part for all new businesses because only taco businesses make it.

The city needs to prioritize its needs. Get rid of this bike nonsense, fix the traffic jams, I get a red light at every corner, pot holes, an event center like the one at Hidalgo, more sidewalks, replace the light poles that are leaning and about to fall. Instead of bringing sales and restaurant jobs that pay minimum wages bring in companies that pay good wages. Maybe then we can afford to go shopping.
