AUSTIN — A Texas lawmaker under fire over a sexual harassment lawsuit, will withdraw from the March 6 Republican primary.
Mike Bergsma, chairman of the Nueces County (Texas) Republican Party, said he was told Thursday morning by four-term U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold's campaign team he will not seek re-election next year.
"It's a damn shame," he said. "He's been an excellent congressman, and I'm sorry this has happened.
"One wonders whether anyone could have survived scrutiny that intense."
A statement from Farenthold's camp was expected later Thursday.
Farenthold, who was seeking a fifth term representing the Coastal Bend area of Texas, has been under intense fire since it was disclosed that he settled a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former aide with $84,000 in taxpayers’ money. He has said the settlement was a strategic decision to put the matter to rest even though he insists the charges are untrue.
The U.S. House Ethics Committee is looking in the allegations even though the Office of Congressional Ethics has said the allegations were unfounded.
On Dec. 1, a Politico report brought attention to a three-year-old dispute involving accusations that Farenthold's allegedly inappropriate behavior led to the termination of a former staffer, Lauren Greene. The two parties settled the matter out of court two years ago, and the controversy was all but dormant. But Politico revealed that the money used to settle the case – $84,000 – came from taxpayer funds.
Farenthold's term ends in 2019.

Blake will not run, but Cesar de Leon, a racist and bigot, continues to make policy for the City of Brownsville. Can't speak out about sexual harrassment and not take action against a bigot and racist on our City Commission. Cesar de Leon should do the honorable thing and resign. Cesar de Leon is an ugly albatross around this city's neck. If Tony Martinez had a pair, de Leon would be gone.

It has come to a point that we may all have to brace ourselves as we continue to finally find out that we have a world full of men who need to satisfy their own needs in many ways before
they can do what they were elected to do. I will agree that some ladies do find a way to flirt and prance around the men in skimpy clothes and that charges up the batteries of the male sex. Dress does not give an excuse, but it sure does tempt people. The game has two sides to the story and if a woman gives herself a limit to her behavior, maybe they men would not get the idea that they is open season for them. The use of cuss words in front of a woman is showing lack of respect but when the women use the same kind of language, a man feels that they are comfortable with that language and use it and then the women call themselves insulted. Women need to give themselves a place in society that does not allow a men to think that improper behavior towards them is not acceptable. And men need to remember that their Mama was a woman and their daughters are also women.
