BLAST FROM THE PAST: CHARRO DAYS GALS 72 YEARS AGO
(Ed.'s Note: Traces of Texas Brownsville reader Sylvia Escamilla sent in this snapshot taken in 1946 of her mom, Raquel Trevino (Later Raquel Escamilla), and friend Ofelia de los Santos dressed up for Charro Days. We were sent it by one of our readers upstate who used to live in Brownsville. It's hard to imagine that the photo was taken 72 years ago with Charro Days just around the bend. What a wonderful shot. Thank you!)

Juan, when some guys published the Charro Days book, many of us sent in pictures like the one you included here but the only one printed was the one of Juliet Villarreal's parents and her brother and the rest of us were told at the book signing that the publisher had made the decision on what pictures to include. These type of pictures would have sold many more copies but they catered to business and publicity and not families. Shame on Knoop and Medrano and some lady who thought we believed their excuse after all the work many of did to send in those pictures. Maybe you could print your own Charro Day book for a profit. We had beautiful pictures of the real events that happened down Elizabeth street and side streets with many of us as kids tossing nickels into plates to win a teddy bear.
Never again will I submit pictures for a project like the last one.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I was just a couple of months old
at that time, can you imagine!
You have to be careful with medrano, says something and does something else. My experience.
Idea: Why not pool any and all pictures for a charro days heritage website?
Another idea - You do it.
