(Ed.'s Note: It's not often that you can walk in downtown Brownsville and find art works such as this fine rendition of la calavera sitting with a bottle of tequila and strumming on a shotgun (yeah, I thought it was a guitar at first, too.).
An oil-on-canvas work by an artist named Velez, it was to be had for a ridiculously small sum of $40. There are more works by Velez at the folk art store located in the rear inside the old Majestic Building now called El Mercado Juarez en Brownsville. Maybe they won't all be as fine as the calaca Lady above, but they are credible works in their own right.
Does anyone know who the artist Velez is and where he may be found?)
