4. Recommend approval of Term Non-chapter 21 contractual personnel for the 2017-2018
school year - Administrator for Public Information Office - (Rolando R. Zamora, Sr.).
Subject to receipt of all outstanding documentation.
By Juan Montoya
The doors at the Brownsville Independent School District Glass Palace (main office) hadn't stopped swinging after former Public Information Officer Ernie Garrido resigned left last Friday than the administration has an item on Monday's special board meeting to replace him with a PIO submitted by Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas at the recommendation of trustee Joe Rodriguez.
The special meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the BISD Main Office at 1900 Price Road.
Garrido left after only eight months at BISD amidst suggestions that Zendejas was not pleased with his performance hustling contributors to her annual gold tournament and the BISD Foundation Gala held last Friday.
"The golf tournament drew some $40,000 less than they expected and they had to give away tickets to the Foundation Gala because they were not moving," an administrator said. "Ernie was trying to move the tickets but the interest wasn't there. In the end, he couldn't put up with the pressure Zendejas was placing on him to make her look good."
But the placing of a replacement for Garrido without posting the opening by Human Resources site, the posting of the job requirements and qualifications, opening the position for applicants, vetting the candidates, ranking them, making a recommendation on a selection or bringing the ranked candidates before the board, has raised suspicions that the hiring of Rolando (Ronnie) Zamora by the board Monday would constitute an illegal hire.
Also, given the fact that Zamora was known to be close to "Coach" Rodriguez when he was the sports editor at the Brownsville Herald when Rodriguez was AD at the BISD, makes it seem like he was that trustees choice without the benefit of going through the BISD's hiring process.
After his stint at the Herald, Zamora also worked with UTB-Brownsville under president Julieta Garcia and edited a monthly sports magazine that featured glowing articles about Rodriguez.
Will board president Cesar Lopez and superintendent Zendejas go through with this apparent circumvention of the BISD hiring process? Stay tuned

Ronnie Zamora still alive? has to be in his early-80s!!!!
Another case of jobs for the family, don't worry about the legal aspect, as we are in Brownsville. Even the DA is corupt look what he's doing with the drunk State Representative Oliveira.
It must be legal, the city of Brownsville HR does it all the time. They create positions without opening them up to the general public, a recent example is the "promotion" of two current employees as HR Analysists, of course these two employees did not have the experience or skills to perform the jobs, they were just good friends of the right person. This is a prime example of corruption and favoritism and you can't blame the former city manager. When will this corruption end, Commissioners?
Ronnie Zamora told me that he had been previously interviewed at the time that Garrido got the job and was runner up for the position. Is this what they are falling back on? They are not hiring from within, so maybe it is not right to not advertise? Now, why does someone not question Coach Joe and Cesar Lopez on this appointment? Oh, but there is no public speaking at a special board meeting, so I guess phone calls are in order. Enough is enough with Coach Joe and if Ronnie is 80, then Coach Joe is over the 100's cause Ronnie used to be the sports announcer when Coach Joe was AD at BHS.
Joe and Cesar, Minerva and Sylvia, put up a block for this appointment and bring it back on a regular board meeting so that people will develop the guts to go in person and question this move. Or call Minerva, cause she spends all her time answering phone calls from the public she promised to work for.
Ronnie maybe be 80 years old but BISD got to hire him because he is camote de joe rodriguez and cuz he can file a age discrimination lawsuit too. hahaha, lol putos
The last time I heard that name Johnson was President...
Say, I just spoke to someone who knows it all and was told that Mr. Garrido had quit because he was sick and tired of working for Atkinson and Pena who called daily requesting or demanding leak material to them. He said he is not used to working for people who do not support their boss. He said he loved his job but felt he worked for BISD and not the board. So, board, do
not go passing the blame to Dr. Z.
Now now Dahlia. You know you can't produce one email or text from either Atkinson or Pena to support your pathetic lies. Everyone knows Espy ran him ragged making him follow her with a camera and cratering to her every whim. Poor guy was exhausted and couldn't handle begging people to buy those darn gala tickets.
Why do you blame Dahlia. You know you always put her down because you are so jealous of her. Work hard and professional like she does and maybe you could get the results she does. We all know who you are Ms. Green person. Get a life and stop blaming Dahlia.
